sororities with national prominence

by: Panhellenic

This is a good snapshot of the prominence of sororities around the country. It's a listing of the greeks that so far have won state titles for Miss America. As you can see, some of the least favored sororities at UA have beauties in other chapters.

I don't think I would have expected this just from knowing the houses at Bama.

that's an interesting way to look at it but Kappa, ChiO, and APhi are also very prominent nationally...other than that, this is spot on

I think PNMs need to be taking a look at some of the sororities we don't rank very highly on here. Especially if they're ever going to live outside of here.

Determining national prominence from the Miss America contest - most screwed up method ever.

Love the girls from top houses here that aren't listed on the post. Of course they think it's a dumb way to rate houses. Is that because houses like Theta and Gamma Phi are listed? It's as good a way as any to look at the kind of girls sororities around the country attract. Facts are facts, folks.

It's dumb because it is just...dumb. Silly. Outdated. Whatever. If it was 1953 and we were wearing cashmere sweater sets for our double date to the malt shop, MAYBE this would be relevant. But I don't think so.

I must be missing something....do you mean girls in sororities that have won the Miss Alabama title or sorority girls across the country that have won Miss America? Because, if you mean girls that have won Miss America, you missed quite a few. Most notably - Ole Miss ChiO sisters won back to back Miss America titles in 1959 and 1960, Mary Ann Mobley and Lynda Lee Mead. However, I also agree that it's a very outdated means of assessing a sorority's national prominence. Just saying the list is incomplete.

Thank you, Miss Chi O.

This list is THIS YEAR'S greek Miss America contestants from various states. In September or whenever the Miss America pageant is on those girls will be the ones vying for the title.

We're not talking outdated 1960's Ole Miss contestants. This is a 2013 list of what sororities have beautiful, talented, pageant girls. This list is complete at least for all the states that have selected their contestants.

I know it's surprising if you've never been out of the state of Alabama that the sororities listed have such amazing women as members in other states. But it's true and it's what's going on right now in other states.

These last two comments are indicative of the problem at our school.

Alabama needs to forget about the 1950s and 1960s and get with the 21st century. Pageant girls are not outdated like double dates to the malt shop. They are relevant to show the accomplishments of sorority women today. This list shows that houses we consider crap are the ones turning out amazing women elsewhere.

Thank you so much, "Look it up," for the clarification. The truth is, I honestly didn't understand the post. I really didn't understand that it meant this year since the post didn't say state titles won in 2013. But, you're waaaay off base in your assumption. I'm actually a Phi Mu in Georgia. Here's the reason I knew about the Chi O/Ole Miss connection. After reading "The Help", I read some comments by the author (in an Atlanta publication, she now lives in Atlanta) and became curious about some of the names used. Many of the book's female characters were members of an Ole Miss sorority. Researching the name Mae Mobley, I found out about Mary Ann Mobley and Lynda Lee Mead being successive Miss America's from the same Chi O chapter. That's why I was aware of that. And if you're wondering why my sorority sisters and I look at Alabama's GreekRank page - it's the most entertaining thing we've found, hands down. The way y'all overreact to things is hilarious!

I go to University of Texas and my friends and I feel exactly the same way! Not in a mean way, but there is so much back and forth on here, it is interesting to watch. We first clicked on the page a while back when they were the featured school on the homepage, and I was an incoming freshman at UT. I check in every now and then to see what's happening, especially since I now have a couple of friends at Alabama. I think overall y'all seem like a fun school with lots of tradition.

I agree that some of the more nationally prominent sororities are not the top ones at Alabama. Maybe they need to do a better job marketing themselves. Especially Theta and Gamma Phi, which seem to be very prominent in other parts of the country.

I do feel that Theta and Gamma Phi do a great job recruiting some great out of state girls. They're not as popular among Alabama girls, but they get a lot of girls from all over the country.
