For those who care, old row has the power to impress in the state of Alabama. Most of us are on our way out of Alabama, though. The old row houses (with some exceptions) are not that good in the rest of the country, so new row suits us just fine. Both can provide a wonderful collegiate experience!

I would just like to add that out of state students are either really bright and getting scholarship money or have plenty of money to pay oos tuition, or both. For those who want to continue the "old row" tradition, go ahead. But you really do have less to gain by doing so. The tides will change, the ships will sail, and your boat will be left behind. Sounds like the race has already started.

It's so funny how people who obviously belong to old row fraternities and sororities keep saying how great it is and how important it is. If it really were that great and important, they wouldn't want to talk about it. My dad went to Yale and was a member of Skull and Bones. He and his friends NEVER mention it. If old row and the machine were still like that we wouldn't be hearing about them in every comment on this site.

This is the best thread! I am from the north and chose to go to Alabama for a couple of reasons. Old row means absolutely NOTHING to me! In fact at our two state schools 4 of Alabama's so called "top houses" either don't exist or are horrible houses! Unless you are planning on stying in Alabama it means nothing! National powerhouses and consistently strong houses across the country are XO, DG, KKG, ZTA, DDD (no order). I can't imagine wanting to be in a house where they all know each other from high school. And the comment from above "kind of like incest" so true, just never thought of it!

Alpha Phi and Gamma Phi are strong presences everywhere except the south. Mid to top houses, especially APhi. And both of those sororities are colonizing like mad in the south due to very strong nationals with lots of money! And some of the Old Row houses are working to establish outside the south. Greek growth of all kinds is great. Alabama is far more progressive school Greekwise than Texas. Texas cannot admit that their Big Six is changing. They JUST won't! But most Bama students can admit that New Row houses are just as valuable as Old Row...just different. But both organizations have traditions and value.

could some old row people be anymore up it's own asses? A lot of old row is being put to shame by good new row these days, and you talk about tradition as if new row has none. As if 130 or 140 years makes you mythical and 90 or 100 years you might as well have showed up yesterday.
