I have noticed a definite change on here. I think there has been a shift towards people not caring old row new row... It's more like seperate and different. Would love to hear some of the fraternities poi onions for us newbies.

There is a BIG difference between old row and new row. Old row has the top houses hands down. There are 1 or 2 good new row houses but they dont even come close to and old row house. More tradition better brotherhood and just better. Old Row or no row....

could some old row people be anymore up it's own asses? A lot of old row is being put to shame by good new row these days, and you talk about tradition as if new row has none. As if 130 or 140 years makes you mythical and 90 or 100 years you might as well have showed up yesterday.

old row fraternities are great, but new row sororities are awesome.

For those who care, old row has the power to impress in the state of Alabama. Most of us are on our way out of Alabama, though. The old row houses (with some exceptions) are not that good in the rest of the country, so new row suits us just fine. Both can provide a wonderful collegiate experience!

Some of the old row sororities are pretty regional to the South, as is KA, but SAE, EN, Phi Delt, Phi Gam, Kappa, DDD, XO, AXO, are all pretty big nationally (not just regionally). DKE isn't large but has maybe the most prominent alumni list of any Greek organization. I'm not old row, but you can't really say most of old row aren't strong elsewhere. But then, so are most of the affiliated new row houses, along with some of the unaffiliated ones.

why do you care what your house is like on someone else's campus? if you went to school there instead they probably wouldn't have pledged you.

I would just like to add that out of state students are either really bright and getting scholarship money or have plenty of money to pay oos tuition, or both. For those who want to continue the "old row" tradition, go ahead. But you really do have less to gain by doing so. The tides will change, the ships will sail, and your boat will be left behind. Sounds like the race has already started.

It's so funny how people who obviously belong to old row fraternities and sororities keep saying how great it is and how important it is. If it really were that great and important, they wouldn't want to talk about it. My dad went to Yale and was a member of Skull and Bones. He and his friends NEVER mention it. If old row and the machine were still like that we wouldn't be hearing about them in every comment on this site.

This is the best thread! I am from the north and chose to go to Alabama for a couple of reasons. Old row means absolutely NOTHING to me! In fact at our two state schools 4 of Alabama's so called "top houses" either don't exist or are horrible houses! Unless you are planning on stying in Alabama it means nothing! National powerhouses and consistently strong houses across the country are XO, DG, KKG, ZTA, DDD (no order). I can't imagine wanting to be in a house where they all know each other from high school. And the comment from above "kind of like incest" so true, just never thought of it!

Pi Phi and Theta. Zeta is more along the lines of AXO, Gamma Phi, APhi, and ADPi nationally.

There are no houses that are good everywhere. I was shocked when I went home for the summer and told people what I'd pledged. I'd gone with one of the old row houses and people back home were horrified. My sorority had lost it's charter at my state school for low numbers and the accusation of hazing. I didn't care, though, because I'm going to college here. I'll deal with that later!

Nothing wrong with the traditions of Old Row, it's admirable. However, it's true, Old Row are the rich kids from in state that all went to high school together. I chose New Row over Old Row. To me, New Row is more fun. And the women that New Row attracts are far better.

Alpha Phi and Gamma Phi are strong presences everywhere except the south. Mid to top houses, especially APhi. And both of those sororities are colonizing like mad in the south due to very strong nationals with lots of money! And some of the Old Row houses are working to establish outside the south. Greek growth of all kinds is great. Alabama is far more progressive school Greekwise than Texas. Texas cannot admit that their Big Six is changing. They JUST won't! But most Bama students can admit that New Row houses are just as valuable as Old Row...just different. But both organizations have traditions and value.

Bama is more progressive than Texas how exactly? Texas is certainly more open to some diversity, and Half the posts on here are still basically saying how worthless everyone who isn't old row is. Sig Ep is universally considered top four at UT and would be considered the equivalent of a new row house.

Texas admits African Americans to its houses. We don't consider that Alabama is as "progressive greekwise" as Texas. AT ALL!

new row women are USUALLY hotter and a fun time. Old row are usually chubby, smart legacies.
