rush week

If my daughter has a 2.7 GPA with tons of community service and lots of extracurriculars should she still rush? I really dont want her getting her hopes up and not getting a bid!!

That's going to be tough. She should expect HEAVY cuts in the early rounds. Looks like she may have had a few too many extracurriculars...

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. If she wants to be in a sorority, then she should rush. She needs to keep her options open and go in prepared that the gpa may not show favorably. I agree, cuts after the first round.

Don't bother putting in the money and effort. She will be dropped by everyone except for DG, Aphi, and gamma phi, and even then they might drop her after first round. She will 99% most likely not get a bid.

Know your info before you give advice. Dg has the 4th highest GPA of all sororities and cuts heavily on grades. Just because you thought they’re bottom doesn’t mean they’ll take that GPA.

To answer the moms question, unless she will be happy in a house known for partying or not be sad about it having only one option all week, I’d have her wait and see what her first semester grades are. Then she can do spring COB, or rush as a sophomore IF her college GPA is way better. If she has a similar GPA in college that she does in HS her choices will be very limited, if at all.

The post above states those three sororities aren't worth being in - ummm and interesting. Not sure where those facts are comiong from. But one thing is definitely, she doesn't rush, she doesn't get in.

There are two types of people in the world. Those that carry a glass half full and those that carry a glass half empty. I guess you and your daughter need to decide how you view the glass and go from there.

If she rushes, she runs the chance of not getting a bid. So does the girl with a 4.0. Nobody can say for sure.
If she rushes and doesn't get a bid, she has still met a ton of people, make good friends in her rush group, gotten a good look inside those mysterious sorority houses, learned something new about sororities and how rush works, learned something about herself. been forced to make small talk with people she doesn't know (which she will have to do her whole life), moved in a week early and gotten started early on her college life. And she might find her best friends for life.

If she doesn't rush, it's guaranteed she will not get a bid.

I say...go for it!

All groups take grade risks. She has a chance to get in any. My pledge sister got in with a 2.8 and she had letters written about how they found out she had adhd, etc. Seemed to work for her but she was ALSO very well connected in Alabama.

Too often people overlook COB bc top recruiting chapters can’t participate. But if you don’t have connections or grades save the mental anguish of formal recruitment and contact Panhellenic about COB after formal has concluded.

Without connections or top grades you would likely get cut by the sororities that are not doing COB anyway.

COB the girls get know the person and not just the resume. During formal recruitment the actives and pnms are tired and don’t have time to get to know each other.

Hard lesson: Grades are typically considered as an evaluation piece for almost any college affiliated activities, be it admissions, scholarships, or our competitive sororities (where the university prints sorority grade report rankings every semester).

Certainly your daughter should go through recruitment, bur definitely with here yes wide open that her choices may be limited. She will be cut from some groups right away, she may be cut by all groups. Importantly, she needs to know she was most likely cut from sororities impersonal lists put in a grade-impacted order. It is not her personally. If she knows she has a limited shot, then her disappointment can be minimized.

All she needs is one sorority to like her and decide to take a grade risk. All sororities offer great programs.
Good Luck to her!
