machine

by:

I am a Texas girl coming to Alabama this fall. I am super excited about Rush. I am from Austin with parents who are UT Greek alum so I am not unfamiliar with strong Greek systems and traditions. But, forgive my ignorance, what is the machine? I get the general concept but what determines if a group is part of it or not? Like I saw a post that said DG was part of the machine, but APhi is not. But isn't DG newer? And what in the world is the general view people have of this concept? It seems rather outdated, but heaven knows I would only say that anonymously on here, lol! Just fill me in with some brief key details, if you don't mind.

The machine is a group consisted of sororities and fraternities, and in short they pretty much run campus. DG was part of the machine before they left campus and are still part of it now, so DG isn't "newer" than Alpha Phi. There's nothing really to know except that if you want to be involved in SGA or be homecoming queen, you need to be in a sorority/fraternity that is backed by the machine. It seems like not a big deal but members of SGA move on to become members of city council/mayors/governors. The machine runs state politics as well. The only sororities not involved in the machine are Alpha Phi, Gamma Phi, and Theta. There's also rumors that Adpi and Pi Phi may possibly be losing their memberships.

The big sister of a friend of mine was a Bama Pi Phi in the mid-90s, and she said they were actually kicked out for a while because they wanted to back one of their sisters for homecoming queen instead of the Machine's pick.

Were Theta or SDT ever affiliated in the past? I think SDT might have been back when they were a stronger group.

Theta and SDT were never affiliated. SDT was never a really strong group at Alabama. And theta would never even be considered to be part of the machine since they had one of their girls run against the Machine's pick (an Alpha Gamma Delta) for homecoming queen in 2012.

My sister is a TX Theta and she said Theta’s National policies are super strict about not being a part of any organization where women don’t run it. The machine is run by OR fraternities.

Calling you out as a troll. Anyone whose parents are UT greek is well familiar with the competitive, vicious, tradition-bound sort of Greek life that is both UT and UA.

if you have both parents as alums, you should know this answer hands-down without having to post on GR.

stop calling people trolls just because they don't live in Alabama! I live in Texas, too, and I've never heard of the machine. It's a legitimate question. Besides, who do you think you are to screen the questions on here???

The replies are correct. UT alums may not know about the machine. They think Texas is as good as it gets (which it is) and they don't want to be bothered with Alabama rednecks - machine or no machine.

Then why is their daughter on this board. They must want better for their child. Machine or no machine.

People don't not know about the machine, TNE, ONE, etc. in Texas. I can attest to that, but don't call people from Alabama rednecks.

This had nothing to do about her parents, she just wanted to know what it means, and if she is a good Texan she will understand the traditions that come with it. There is no need to criticize her for this.

Sorry about the redneck term. There are so many hippies in Austin that some people say "redneck" affectionately, believe it or not. Oh well, all I have to say is Beat the A&M please.

It was me, and I wasn't trying to be rude. I just truly didn't get it. UT has lots of traditions and a fairly standard way of ranking the sororities into tiers....but no "machine" that controls stuff. I honestly did not understand and didn't want to make a fool of myself at during rush or social outings. Sorry if I offended anyone and gee...sorry I asked. Thank you to those who were not reading ulterior motives into everything I asked.

By: Sorry!

Well, I did see a question from another post about a PNM with a 2.7 GPA. Guess they were admitted to UA. Guess that should tell you something!

Plenty of girls and guys CAN get into A&M and even UT that chose not to go there. Since both schools are majority Texas kids some Texans just want to go elsewhere.

This girl asked a question. A fairly reasonable question, I think. Now she has been called a liar AND stupid. Nice.

Welcome to Alabama where we insult you before we even meet you!

I got into A&M but chose to go to alabama because I liked the campus and the people more. I'm certainly not stupid with a 3.4 and 1940 SAT, so don't make fun of UA! This is a great school!

It's an OK school...and mostly a second choice because you didn't get into a more competitive school...unless you live in Alabama.
