machine
by: Ok....
I am a Texas girl coming to Alabama this fall. I am super excited about Rush. I am from Austin with parents who are UT Greek alum so I am not unfamiliar with strong Greek systems and traditions. But, forgive my ignorance, what is the machine? I get the general concept but what determines if a group is part of it or not? Like I saw a post that said DG was part of the machine, but APhi is not. But isn't DG newer? And what in the world is the general view people have of this concept? It seems rather outdated, but heaven knows I would only say that anonymously on here, lol! Just fill me in with some brief key details, if you don't mind.

The machine is a group consisted of sororities and fraternities, and in short they pretty much run campus. DG was part of the machine before they left campus and are still part of it now, so DG isn't "newer" than Alpha Phi. There's nothing really to know except that if you want to be involved in SGA or be homecoming queen, you need to be in a sorority/fraternity that is backed by the machine. It seems like not a big deal but members of SGA move on to become members of city council/mayors/governors. The machine runs state politics as well. The only sororities not involved in the machine are Alpha Phi, Gamma Phi, and Theta. There's also rumors that Adpi and Pi Phi may possibly be losing their memberships.

People don't not know about the machine, TNE, ONE, etc. in Texas. I can attest to that, but don't call people from Alabama rednecks.
This had nothing to do about her parents, she just wanted to know what it means, and if she is a good Texan she will understand the traditions that come with it. There is no need to criticize her for this.

It was me, and I wasn't trying to be rude. I just truly didn't get it. UT has lots of traditions and a fairly standard way of ranking the sororities into tiers....but no "machine" that controls stuff. I honestly did not understand and didn't want to make a fool of myself at during rush or social outings. Sorry if I offended anyone and gee...sorry I asked. Thank you to those who were not reading ulterior motives into everything I asked.

The big sister of a friend of mine was a Bama Pi Phi in the mid-90s, and she said they were actually kicked out for a while because they wanted to back one of their sisters for homecoming queen instead of the Machine's pick.
Were Theta or SDT ever affiliated in the past? I think SDT might have been back when they were a stronger group.
