what do y’all mean by “wealthy”????

by:

I keep hearing that girls who go here are wealthy but to some ppl that means parents making $100k a year and to others that’s 400k so around how much do girls parents make here??? I’m asking bc I want to have fun and go to nice dinners and I tend to get jealous easily so I don’t wanna lose out on fun. How much do girls spend a week on average here?

This topic has been discussed ad nauseum. There's even a poll here asking about parents' income. Just look it up. But the main points are:

1) Yes we realize that there are billionaires in the Northeast and West and all those other places who are truly "wealthy."

2) Everyone in Greek Life here will be a lot richer than you would expect. If you get jealous easily then you will be triggered a lot. Unless you are almost billionaire level, there will be girls here who are richer than you. There are a lot of Mercedes/BMW/Land Rovers and Gucci/LV/Hermes here.

I know a girl whose dad makes $5 million a year with his business and she has a Roger and LV bags, but so do a LOT of other girls here. No one here is specially the "rich girl."

The Pretty White Girl (PWG) is going extinct.
They are America's rarest human species.
America's smallest minority group. 🥺

PWGs are @ 1 in 15 in last Spring's sorority PCs.

Take many pictures of them, so we can remember what they looked like... 🦄

I know girls who easily spend $2000 a month on clothes, getting massages after a long week of classes, travel every weekend there isn’t a home football game, and just random stuff. But then I know girls whose parents give them $150 a month to spend and they make it work. If you get jealous don’t hang out with the “rich girls”. But besides what they have you would not easily guess who they are because most of them never shove it in your face. I think picking your friends based on who can spend more or less isn’t the best thing to do though in my opinion. Most friend groups in my sorority has a wide range of spending levels. It’s not like there is just one group of all the rich girls.

I know of rich and cash poor girls in literally every sorority. It is not a big deal. Just don’t seem like you have money problems in recruitment because they will drop you as a financial attrition risk

The real cream of the Alabama elite are not ones with a ton of money. Most families took a hard shellacking during the Civil War and their fortunes never recovered. They have enough to go to college and join a sorority, but they're not living the flashy life of a nouveau riche like the girls on this thread. My grandma had a word for girls like that

So true. I live out in the country and girls I know that also live in their old family homes laugh at the city girls in their MacMansions who think that being salary wealthy gives them status.

If your parents bought you a new car at 16, 18 or graduation that is worth $40k ish, then you are well off. If you got a car worth $60k or more, then you are prob on the wealthy side. Do not mean to suggest the material things matter, but this is a good way to give y’all an idea. Plenty of monied girls around here. Most do not worry about $$ much. If you are oos, you will be surprised.

by: ..

wealth is all relative. in my town if even your parents own a $40k car you're rich. If they buy you a car when you're 16 you're rich. I still can afford to go to school here because I'm on a full tuition scholarship but I take out loans for dues. I work all summer and all school year so i can pay to eat/ go out, etc. It's possible for most people to rush you just have to be mindful that you won't get to spend like the other girls. You can borrow dresses for date parties/formals, pregame more than buying drinks out. Keep pizza rolls/mac&cheese in your dorm so you don't have to keep buying cookout as your drunk food. If you aren't a jealous person and can budget for yourself you'll be fine.

She is talking about parents buying their daughter a 40k or 60k car. Not that the parents have such a car. If a parent can drive a 40k car, then you are lower middle class at Bama

My parents buy $45-60K cars for themselves (and us kids) and don't go over board. They can easily drop $100K on a car, but that's just not their style. Both my parents work and make a very good living with salaries combined $1.5M. I think some people like to be flashy and showy, while others are more reserved with their wealth. Nothing wrong with either, just a difference on how you were raised or priorities in life.

Prob gonna get downvoted for this.

Pick and choose your house wisely, I picked a house I thought would be the best house for sisterhood but I really don't have anything in common with my sisters.

I personally never thought of myself as rich but normal. I don't mean to brag in any sort of way but I was personally underwhelmed by the lack of things.

I grew up eating out everyday, hair done every week, shopping whenever I felt. I'm not a partier so my "going out" was always out to eat or to shop. I didn't really get to know a lot of girls in my house because I wasn't going to bars and frat parties. When it came to things that I liked to do they couldn't afford it. It led me to become friends with girls in other sororities.

By: My take
by: Same

I agree with this! I am not much of a partier and grew up shopping as my way to have fun. Even though there are other wealthy girls in my house they aren't my best friends. I get frustrated with my friends silently because they can't afford to do the things I enjoy. I'm in a house that unfortunately doesn't hang out with other sororities as much and I'm in a major mainly with a lot of guys and I have a BF at another school pretty far away, so I haven't been as lucky as "my take" by being able to make friends in other houses who can do the same things as me. It has even made me consider transferring multiple times because it has not been easy to fit in my house in that way.

Maybe while you're in college you can broaden your interests and learn to get to know people instead of spending all your time collecting things. You sound extremely shallow, but maybe you'll meet some genuine girls who will take you on and help you grow up

The 'wealthy' girls I know here don't seem to care about who else has what, and I don't hear them judging any other girl based on what labels she wears or car she drives or stuff she buys or not. I have noticed that girls most preoccupied with that stuff are the ones who don't have it. They think it matters to people way more than it actually does and that they are being judged all the time. These girls are insecure and materialistic and generally unhappy and unfulfilled. I know other girls who are limited in what they can spend and accept it and make do with Target finds and other budget stuff and look amazing. Girls who are chill about it either way, wealthy or not, are so much nicer to be around and tend to be more popular.

There are so many girls here whose daddy’s have done some illegal moves to get or keep money.
Wealth can be quite an illusion.
Also, old money is not as respectable as new money..

Living off grandpa’s inherited timberland is not as impressive as Daddy being a surgeon spending his summer volunteering in third world countries repairing cleft palates.

You've got it exactly backward. We're in the South, honey, and inherited wealth is wayyyyy more prestigious. Not saying it's not nice to volunteer in 3rd world countries (which unfortunately is a lot like some of the rural parts of our own state), it's just nicer to live off the timber and have a Mama that's a lawyer and Daddy that's a surgeon/volunteer.

Most girls buy small and online boutique stuff

A lot of girls shop at a store in Tuscaloosa called Effie’s which one top can easily be $200, making a total outfit $400+. Some girls go in there and drop $1000 just for a date party dress, new gameday outfit, and clothes just because. Dukes and Canterbury Clothiers are also local boutiques but not as popular. Still as or more expensive, just different looks. Revolve is very popular for online shopping and Hemline in Birmingham. But as for going to class most girls, not just the wealither ones, are just in total Lululemon outfits or a sorority shirt with their Hermès H clicks and Yurmans

So how often do y’all go on weekend trips? And what do you mean by weekend trips? I want to participate but I’m worried I won’t have enough spending money

By: Pnm
by: Umm

Freshman don't travel as much because there are a lot more things they don't want to miss like swaps, band parties, darties, and just random events. But I will say I have seen a big influx of girls taking weekend trips to Nashville and the beach. You will probably spend the most money on a fall break and spring break trip if you decide to do something like that with your friends

Freshman do travel.....to friends schools, away games, concerts, boyfriends, breaks, new friends homes for the weekend, etc

It would be odd to be gone all the time, but it's not unusual for freshman to be away.
