I think that part of what is happening is that AXOs, PMs and their alums are on this site year-round promoting their houses. Then, as actual recruitment week gets nearer and nearer, more actives and alums from other houses start paying more attention this site. And the fights begin...

Agree with this. Let’s face it. The top six are all great. All the chapters here do outstanding. But there is a clear top group of six that stand out in recruitment for vast majority of pn,s:
Three are unique: AXO, pm and ddd
Three are very similar: kd kappa xo

What do you mean by that? I don't really see XO as all that similar to KD and Kappa to be honest.

I see the six divided up into three groups:
1. AXO and Phi Mu have their types. For AXO it’s perfect grades and for Phi Mu it’s perfect looks.
2. KKG and KD have the same type too - family connections and old money
3. XO and DDD are similar because they don’t have a set “type.” They both take a variety of the types above - some really pretty, some really smart, some old money, etc.

Are you joking? KD takes their share of legacies, but after that it is the left overs from AGD and Kappa.
But Kappa gets their legacies and some top girls, but then many AXO and pmu castaways.
xO is the is the not cute in state AXO wannabes then MS and Memphis girls.
DDD is the only one of those four in the running for most top pnms that are not already fir,lay committed elsewhere and are giving AXO and pmu the most competition.

Part of the legacy issue is that all OR, but KD, DDD and KKG especially, have been strong here for a very long time and have a ton of chapter legacies coming through every year. And the alums push hard for us to take them. A lot of these legacies are really great girls and their moms are part of what made the chapters strong in the first place and built these beautiful houses for us. Not all legacies are going to be a good match, but if they would fit in, it makes sense to take them if we can. But too many legacies and we don't have enough room for the other great PNMs we would like to take. And that's before we even get to the non-chapter legacies, who also deserve an extra look. So it's a balancing act.
PM (and kinda AXO) haven't been as strong for as long, and are not as strong nationally, so they don't have as many legacies coming through and have more room for unknown PNMs.

The 4 you list lose top legacies and pnms to alpha chi and phi mu who want to do more than party. It has happened big time in the last years to some of the most connected girls to KD and Kappa. Ddd also gets girls who want more than what KD and kappa have to offer.
You can still party in a smart house btw.
