recs

by: Hll

Hey yall! I signed up for fall recruitment but I am having trouble finding enough people that will write recs for me. I am OOS and to be honest nobody in my family is involved in greek life. Though I have some friends from other schools and people from my HS that agreed to write down recs for me, I have only 6 at the moment. I have decent grades and an interesting resume but I am kinda worried about it. One of my friends from Bama told me recs aren't such a big deal: She got 6 and got a bid.
Another girl said she got recs only for half of the sororities and got a bid from chi-o.
I will try my best to get as much recs as I can but if I don't get one for every sorority is that much of a big deal like people on this site always say?
Thanks!

You need recs! There is info about them in the Recruitment section of the Alabama Panhellenic website. I send them in for lots of Bama PNMs. As for your friend who got a Chi-O bid, I'll bet at least one of her recs was for Chi-O. Same for the one with six recs. It's likely her bid was from one of the six. Some sorority nationals require them. Typically in the SEC, if you don't have recs to a specific sorority, you're in danger of getting dropped by that sorority after first round.

You said friends at other schools have agreed to give you recs. While some sororities will accept recs from undergrad members (at different schools from where the PNM is rushing), recs are USUALLY sent in by sorority alumnae. They would use a form from their nationals and send it to their sorority's Bama chapter, along with your photo and resume.

You may know more alumnae than you think. Ask every woman you know who went to college if she has a sorority affiliation. Teachers, coaches, neighbors, bosses, ladies you know from church, babysat for, your mom's friends, your friends moms. Your parents can ask co-workers. I know people who found recs for their daughters by posting on Facebook that she needed them. The response was great!

Read the info about recs at the Panhellenic site and keep working towards getting them for every sorority at Bama. Good luck to you!

If you find a sorority alum who will write you a rec, ask her if she knows of other sorority alumnae who could help you.
It IS a big deal, especially in the SEC. Keep trying - you can do it!

You MIGHT get a bid if one of the houses that chooses you is one you happen to have have a rec for. That is a BIG gamble to take in a rush as competitive as Alabama's.

I wrote comment 1, but comment 2 is spot on. We network a lot. Alumnae from different sororities than mine often contact me about helping out someone with a rec for my sorority as well...and I do the same . We live in an area where most PNMs are headed to the SEC, so we get real busy with this in the summer.

My daughter got into BAMA and wants so badly to rush...we are from Southern California and she is worried about not getting a bid because her GPA is 2.9 is a 3.1 weighted. Her high school was a college preparatory school so the curriculum is more challenging then a public high school, is this taken into consideration at all or will she be automatically cut? She also has a lot of leadership work and charity work on her resume. She is above average in the looks department as well. Please let me know what you think! She is thinking of not going to Alabama because of this.

Hey! There's really know way to know it will be hard with a 2.9 but nothing is impossible, however I think you might be giving away a bit too much information for this site! She will like bama with your without a sorority! Roll tide! But things are extremely Greek oriented so I'd try my very best!
