instagram importance

by: .

For recruitment, is it better for a pnm to have an instagram that looks polished and shows off your accomplishments, even if it look kinda boring, or would it be better to have an instagram that has a lot of party pics to show that you're social?

It’s been said before, but I guess it must be said again. If you think your grandma/ pastor/ teachers would disapprove of your insta pics, don’t post them or delete them. It’s time to behave, act like you are ready for college, and put your best self out there.

Instagram/ Facebook/ Twitter are social media tools. If you aren’t into using your social media or keeping it current, that’s your choice. But, like all tools, they are only useful if you use them and are good at using them. Otherwise, you are just putting yourself behind or at a disadvantage. My tips- keep it clean and the content rated PG or G. Make your media public WITH A NAME LIKE YOUR NAME from now until rush ( you can change your handle and go private after). We have recruitment teams divided by areas of the country. As we get your info in from Panhellenic and from recs, we start looking you up. If we see nothing other than your resume and your rec picture, we put you on a list to watch or drop. If we like what we see on your resume AND your social media, we show you off. If several girls like what we see, you go on our lists to watch or even our tops lists. If you are on a tops list, you will have to really blow it during recruitment to get bumped down. This is how girls from obscure areas get noticed.

Both! But it depends on the kind of party/social pics you’re posting. No drinks, cups, beers, juuls, cigarettes or any of that.

Also depends on what type of sorority you are looking to be in. If you’re looking to join one of the sororities who focuses more on looks and popularity (Zeta, Alpha Phi, GPhi and sometimes Phi Mu) then having a social and fun looking instagram would be more important. If you are looking for a more character based house (Alpha Chi, Chi O, Alpha Gam, etc) then accomplishments will be more favored.

On insta you want to look social, popular, cute, stylish and community oriented. Avoid group shots for prom or graduation unless it is very elegant and your friends complement you well.

will this affect rush? I didn't delete them because of anything bad, just kinda over social media

I stopped using instagram too a while ago and I'm a little curious if it's an issue because they won't have anything to go off of. I just stopped caring about it so I don't use it anymore.

It won’t hurt you but it definitely won’t get you ahead. Instagrams among other social media are a way for us to get insight into your hobbies, personality, interests, etc. and therefore if you don’t have one we will feel more skeptical because we don’t know you and the house will have a harder time matching you with girls you will get along with since we’re unclear on what you’re in to.

I didn't have an Instagram and I got a full schedule each round and was hotboxed. I did have recs from recent graduates, important alumni and national officers though. I think if your recs give a lot about you, you will be fine.

No, not Amish. Just not into posting my face all over the internet. TBH, a lot of my friends aren't using Insta anymore, either.

I would say the first description. I've never seen a pnm's insta before rush and thought "wow she's really successful, but what a bore!" But I have seen one and thought "wow she looks really social but also like a potential standards risk"

Never had an issue with a girl looking “boring” definitely been concerned because a girl looks weird. If you have 60 followers, get 12 likes on your photos, and all of your photos seem strange then you should probably make sure your insta is hidden and not easy to be verify that it’s yours.
By no means am I saying you need to be an insta thot with 5,000 followers, but think about how a complete stranger is going to interpret what your insta says about you.

Here's what I recommend....

Create an Insta that is really different from who you are. I mean if you are a party girl, post only pictures in your pjs eating popcorn with mom and dad.

Are you a bookworm and like to be alone, break out the bikinis and find some guys to get pics with. Post them.

Like to be with a big group of friends? Don't post those pics, only pics of you alone.

You get the idea.

If you do this, make it public and like all the actives you can find.

You should really have a great time next year connnecting with all the girls who are absolutely NOT like you!

Get over yourself.

It's funny, get a sense of humor.

And actually soood advice on not wanting somewhere you won't be accepted or worse- faking your way into misery.

Too many “fake their way into misery” because they think they are going to reinvent in a fresh start. Free advice— you are who you are and just be true to yourself. You will end up where you are supposed to. It’s all good.
