Are there any fraternities not in the Machine that actually pull a little weight?

Could someone from another affiliated house like lxa successfully run for senate or something?

would it be possible for a house who is not affiliated with the Machine to run for SGA and win? Or maybe even for an unaffiliated house to become affiliated?

I think unaffiliated houses can become affiliated although I don't know what that entails.

the kid is solid, the machine has no stars that are eligible for the office and the right right people are approached in the right way, there have been a few instances where nonmachine canidates have been endorsed by the machine, and more often, cases where the machine will stay neutral

It doesn't matter since the SGA doesn't do anything. Nonmachine candidates have been backed for Exec before but Senate it really doesn't matter. Actually the Machine barely controls anything anymore except SGA, IFC, and Panhellenic.

and may not be. It's been a while since thers has been as issue worth contesting. Has been no concerted effort/issue since I've been at UA.

That said, it's probably best not to sleep on the Machine. There has been a slow erosion of control, but noone has taken them on directly, and I figure there's a few more good fights left in the rusty contaption

I think Bama is the only school in the country where any student actually cares about the SGA.

It's like being in Model UN in high school. A joke.

Machine works off the favor system, if houses owe your house a favor you can put up a candidate for an SGA office and get that houses vote. If enough houses owe you favors you have enough votes to get the endorsement. Even non-machine houses have gotten machine backed candidates based on favors they are owed for assisting the Machine.

The Machine runs the school, but it doesn’t stop there. They are well intertwined with state government and even Federal government. It goes way back, like all things at this school. There are a few times in school history where a non-machine candidate has won SGA. Very rare though. Non-member houses have had members run, usually without success. For example, ATO had a candidate a few years ago, but he lost. Joe Scarborough (yes the one with the tv show) tried to run against The Machine when he was here, he lost. This is why he despises the Machine and will even bring it up on his show. He clearly isn’t over it, bless his heart. The Machine is just part of life here and it prob always will be. They can be beat, it just takes the hell of a fight and strategy.
