transferring

by:

Okay y’all I have a few questions about transferring

I know A LOT of people who pledge certain sororities just to transfer so they can be top teir somewhere else.

This doesn’t apply to just alabama but other schools as well. Do other chapters just automatically let people in??

I am in an OR at bama and we had a few people transfer in our chapter and we basically had no chance of rejecting them if that makes sense..

So if anyone knows about the process at other schools say so because it’s just annoying how people try to cheat the process when we go through recruitment with 3000 girls

Some sororities automatically let transfers in. Not sure if any of them are on our campus but my mom advises for her chapter of AXiD and that's how they do it. Most sororities have a simple blind vote to approve a transfer into their chapter and then it's done. You wouldn't really be 'rejected' unless you are a grade or rep risk.

The idea is that you should trust your sisters no matter what chapter they come from. At the end of the day EVERY chapter is supposed to be pledging women they feel uphold the values of XYZ. If hundreds of women in a sorority at UA agree that a girl is worthy of getting a bid from them, and they go through the whole pledge process with her and she gets initiated, then she IS a sister of that sorority.

It's super rude to basically go against that and reject a woman just because she's a transfer. I know it sucks and seems stupid and yes some people use it to game the system but whether you like it or not your chapter does NOT exist in a bubble and you are a member of XYZ WHEREVER you go, no matter what "tier" your sorority is at one school versus another.

TLDR if you were to reject a transfer you would basically be telling your sisters at another chapter that you didn't trust their judgement to decide if a girl fits the values of XYZ and just because that girl is a transfer doesn't make her any less worthy of wearing her letters than you.

I get what the person above me is saying but still agree with OP.
Chapters are different everywhere. What an XYZ chapter looks for in a PNM can be very different across the United States regradless of letters. I’m not saying one doesn’t get to wear the letters over the other but this post specifically regards to people trying to beat the system

There was a blogger last year who went to Lehigh, decided to transfer after first semester but stuck it out to go through recruitment that spring to see if joining a sorority changed her mind. She got initiated but still decided to transfer to Wisconsin. When she approached the Wisco chapter of APhi, they invited her to their events (there were a few other transfer APhis that year too) and they told her she could be voted on to join the chapter next semester (Spring 2018), while some other transfers were immediately voted on. She decided not to pursue initiating into the Wisco chapter because she felt it was unfair she had to wait while others did not. This is all publicly posted on her blog.

We've all seen the posts floating around at different schools about how PNMs will pledge certain chapters just so they can transfer back to the better version of that chapter in their hometown. In fact, there was a girl on the Bama GR page only two years ago who said she was dead set on PKT and when she ended up in Theta, she knew she'd transfer back to Texas. Whether or not any of those concerns or rumors are true is impossible to know, but that's the real motivation behind not accepting transfers - you don't want a girl who only joined your chapter at one school just so they could transfer to a "better" chapter. THAT is someone not living up to the chapter's values.

That being said, given how rare I think that situation is, I think it should be a fairly seamless process to initiate a transfer.

I'm 100% certain that the GR poster last year was a fake. I have family who is a Texas Theta and they for sure knew about the situation and were on the lookout. In any case, there were no transfers from Alabama this year or last anyways, so the poster either chickened out or never existed in the first place (given the inflammatory nature of the post, I'm assuming the latter).

oh I totally agree the theta transfer poster was a complete troll, but it's more that the general idea - pledging a chapter at one school so you can transfer back to your home school because you believe that's easiest - is why people hesitate to accept transfers at some chapters. Again I don't think it's nearly as prevalent as people make it out to be, but that's the reasoning.

hey girl i was a transfer student. A little background on myself, I’m currently an alumna of an OR sorority. I had no interest in Bama until I met my boyfriend and i visited here a couple of times. I love my sorority nationally, not just both of the chapters.

The process for my sorority to transfer in has no vote, but I have to wait a semester before I can become active again. No one told me this, but I found the process on the chapter’s bylaws. I also can’t go to any of the sorority’s events or chapters so i feel in the dark and don’t know anything that’s going on.
