paying for sorority
by: HCan you take out loans? Is that not an option? My parents are paying tuition and don't want to pay for the sorority.

If you are considering a loan for a sorority, you need to get your priorities in check. The sororities offer payment plans. If doing something like that would still be a financial struggle, find another organization or club sport to get involved with to meet people and won't come at the high price tag.

Please don't rush if you can't afford the dues commitments. You won't last long after bid day and you will be taking away a spot from someone who really wants it and can pay the dues and expenses.
If you are serious about Greek life and are willing to work in the summers and/or during the year to pay for it.... It can be done. I know a couple girls who make good money during the summer tand save up for expenses and dues.

Your parents are paying for your school and you will graduate debt free. Be thankful for that because many people don't have that financial support. Taking out a loan for dues would be ridiculous and irresponsible. We all know how expensive sorority dues are so you should have been working and saving for some time. Maybe work during school and over the summer save your money and rush as a sophomore but sorority life is expensive beyond dues.

Everyone deserves to be a part of greek life, but if you can't afford it don't rush. Make sure you have a plan in place as far as payment long before you accept a bid or get initiated. I know that might be tough to hear if you really want to rush but 10k (depending on your house) is not something you can just work part time minimum wage and come up with. If you dont know how your paying for it at this point, you probably can't. Save up and rush as a sophomore.

How are y'all working minimum wage jobs and coming up with money for dues?! I work for $8.10 an hour and get around 10-20 hours a week usually resulting in a paycheck of anywhere from $164-$301 every 2 weeks. I've only made about a 1.5k this summer including my next two paychecks.
Trust me, if I could be working 40 hours a week, I would be, but there's simply not enough hours where I work. Most I've gotten in a week was 28.

So $20 - $25 for shirts, but I've always wondered how much all the pictures people get from events are too.
I'm super lucky that my parents are paying for my school that my scholarships aren't covering and will also pay for sorority dues, but I'd like to use my own money for my day to day expenses as much as I can, if for no other reason, than to start figuring out how to balance my own cash and make sure I won't be at a loss when I am out of school and on my own.
Also, shouldn't sorority houses have costume rooms at this point? I mean, with all these theme parties, I imagine a large prop room in each house with a ton of stuff from past years.
Same with formal dresses. I know styles change, but I imagine there would be a thriving underground formal dress exchange/consignment thing happening. Maybe these things are part of the super secret stuff you find out about after you are initiated.

I would say if your planning on taking out more than $1500 don't do it. You don't want to drown your self in bills before you've even get started. Although if you do work during the school year it could be managed. Its not the most glamorous job in the world but servers/waitresses DO make a lot of money, especially in a town like TTown where people are going every night of the week. I worked as a server this summer and my first check was about $320 for two weeks of work and keep in mind most restaurants only pay their servers $3-4/ Hour. And that doesn't even include tips. But it just depends how much time your willing to spend working, which will probably be less than 20 hrs if your a freshman and in a sorority. But please don't put yourself in a financial hole if you know you can't afford it this year. Maybe work this year and during the summer and try and rush sophomore year?

Agree. Never take out a loan for social stuff. School loans are daunting enough to pay off.
If you can't cash flow your dues by working in the summers and saving for the school year, you really should look for other orgs to join.
