rush dresses

yes really. i assume you're the same girl who's posted the other five questions in a row so let me enlighten you... whatever you read on this site is generalized. nothing's specific because no one can tell you exactly how your rush experience will pan out. no one can tell you whether this or that will hurt you during rush because it's subject to change from person to person, so people just give general answers.
so to answer your question, definitely no off the shoulder. and preferably no spaghetti straps. rush is a formal event. you want to clean up well and make yourself presentable. this is not the time to look "hot," save it for the parties.

In all of the pictures I've seen of what girls have worn in the past, a huge majority of them are wearing spaghetti straps. Will wearing spaghetti straps hurt me even if my dress is formal enough?

Free people is too casual in general. There are exceptions, and I love free people, but I'd try and go to the more formal side. If something is questionable, better off playing it safe and not wearing it. You can always bring it and ask your rho chi!

Don't listen to the person above. Girls go through rush so quickly it's hard to remember what they wore unless it was really inappropriate. Off the shoulder is a huge trend right now and I can't imagine anyone would get cut for it as long as the dress is long enough and classy. I wore a strapless dress one day and I ended up bidding an old row. I promise you no one will be like oh she was wearing spaghetti straps cut her. Don't worry, just dress your style. We can't wait to meet you :))

No. We actives keep detailed notes about all the PNMs we speak to. Personally, I STRONGLY advice no off the shoulder or spaghetti straps. The only girls who can get away with stuff like this or have a bra/bralette showing are top PNMs and that's because they're top PNMs. But if you're an average PNM and you want to make a good impression, then please dress formally... So no bra/bralette showing ever, no off the shoulder dresses, and no spaghetti straps. Will you see girls wearing dresses like this? Yes, they can wear whatever they want... But if YOU want to be safe then be more formal. There are lot's of dresses that cover your shoulders that are soooo cute anyways!!!

What we see here from @no is important to note. While the great majority of actives will not judge you on things like spaghetti straps, some do. The attitude of the poster @no is something that presents a risk for you if you stray outside a very conservative line. Just something to be aware of. I have little doubt that the poster is from an old row house and is an outlier even there. But still. If you get her on a convo and are wearing something she thinks is not appropriate, you have an issue...

Lol I didn't realize I had an attitude while writing? Everything I said is the truth and I'm sorry if you misconstrued it as attitude...
The fact of the matter is that if you want to play it SAFE through rush, then I would advice no off the shoulder dresses, no spaghetti straps, and no bras/bralettes showing. I'm actually from an OR house lol and my house has very strict rules about this kind of stuff, especially with showing bras/bralettes. All I'm saying is that this is what I would advise based on my own experience with my house... I know other houses are very strict about this stuff as well. If you can't adhere to a "formal dress code" for just a few days it shows us a lot about your character... I'm not saying you need to be covered from head to toe, all I'm saying is that it can only benefit you if you have your shoulders decently covered with no bras/bralettes showing. Again, there are so many safe, cute, and fun dress options out there!

I'll just say that if you choose to wear a "trend" then guarantee that 1/4 of the girls in your RC group will also be wearing the same thing. Which means whatever outfit you're wearing isn't going to be unique or particularly stand out. The reason off the shoulder and spaghetti straps are discouraged is because it's extremely easy for it to go bad. Extremely. I've seen a lot of hot messes. The extra 2 inches of fabric in a sleeveless shift dress isn't going to make you any sweatier than a strapless and has zero chance of falling down and making you pull your dress up. Just be safe.
Idk about other houses, but I know mine and at least 2 other houses have been explicit about exposed underwear and rompers. If your clothes are so thin and skimpy that your bra is showing, then you have some problems, and you don't look cute at all.
"Lots of" girls in your PNM GroupMe are going to try and risk it (some Free People is okay - try going with Anthropologie instead - Mumu is definitely not). But remember, we also cut "lots of" girls ourselves, so if you want to risk it, go ahead. Of course, very fit girls and well connected girls can wear pretty much whatever they want without consequences, but they're like 10% of all PNMs.

For any OOS girls this thread is a great illustration of the difference between southerns and northerners. I'm from the west coast and it took me a long time to get used to the fact that in the south there is a much more rigid sense of what you can/ can't do and the right/ wrong way to dress or act. I think some of the people in this thread are being super dramatic about things like spaghetti straps, but you will be rushed by girls who actually feel that strongly, must won't care but still.

I think the dress code is something that is endearing and part of what makes Bama, Bama. We take this greek stuff seriously (for the most part) and want the process to be respected. Yes, there are certain Southern-style etiquette and such, but if we did not have those, we would be just like some other random school. We are what we are. If you come down here with the attitude that you are not willing to even try to assimilate and respect the Southern culture, then certainly old row is not going to take to you.

I would say no to tobi, it's generally very short dresses and cheap quality. Please watch your length of the dresses. A good rule is ask your grandma or older brother if it's appropriate. Trends are okay but don't go overboard

This sounds like advice from a MOM.
I was at recruitment last year. YES, girls were wearing spaghetti strap and off-the-shoulder is big this year, so we'll see a lot of it. Southern girls love fashion. But most of our students are NOT Southern.
And honey, even if you "try to assimilate," old row will still not take you. Unless, of course, you have connections.

Actually most of our students ARE southern, but moving past that-- we are in Alabama. You can't willingly choose to come here and then complain about how we prefer things like clothing. If these girls really want to wear and act exactly what and how they want without repercussions they should stay near home where they are comfortable.
