what is a legacy...

by: Sorority Legacy

Some PNM's think they are a legacy when they really aren't, or have expectations of how recruitment will go for them as a legacy. Here's the deal:
You are a legacy if your sister, mother, or grandmother is/was a member of the national organization. You are NOT a legacy from an aunt or cousin. Great-grandmothers may or may not count toward your legacy status; national sororities' rules differ on this. If you are a step or adopted, certain nationals will consider you legacy if your family's sorority member requests it, with other sororities only blood relations count.

You are not guaranteed a bid as a legacy, but you will get an extra look, just so you don't fall through the cracks, and you should be asked back to the first invited round at your legacy house. If your legacy house releases you, it will be sometime before pref round.

Membership selection is up to each chapter. Many houses could fill two or three New Member classes with just legacies. There is just not room to take every legacy, so chapters must base selection on best fit. Don't take it personally if you are released from your legacy house.

Some chapters do consider aunts legacies, just none of the ones we have here. And ChiO doesnt count grandmothers.

Alpha Chi Omega: great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, or sister. Step and half relatives IF the member considers the PNM to be a legacy.

Alpha Delta Pi: grandmother, mother, sister

Chi Omega: mother, sister

Delta Delta Delta: mother, step-mother, sister, step-sister

Delta Gamma: great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, sister. Includes step and half relatives.

Kappa Alpha Theta: great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, sister. Step relatives of the member considers the pnm to be a legacy.

Kappa Delta: grandmother, mother, sister. Step and half relatives if the member considers the pnm to be a legacy.

Kappa Kappa Gamma: great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, sister.

Pi Beta Phi: grandmother, mother, sister

Sigma Delta Tau: great-grandmother, grandmother, mother, sister. Includes step and half relatives.

Zeta Tau Alpha: grandmother, mother, sister.

Generally grandmothers are considered only if the mother was also a member. If the legacy skipped a generation it doesn't mean as much in the grand scheme of things at alabama.

Nationals' legacy policies are firm on who's a legacy or not, so "doesn't mean as much" doesn't mean that the granddaughter doesn't get legacy status. Now, if a legacy has a close CHAPTER connection, like her mom or sister came from Bama, that will give her some additional advantage. But a legacy is a legacy.

I just meant that only having a grandmother as a legacy basically puts you at the bottom of the legacy list (depending on who she was) because so many girls go through with way more legacy connection than that. For example tri delt doesn't even require chapters to extend one courtesy invite so having a legacy from a grandmother probably wouldn't help you that much.
