does bama need more sororities?
by: Hound's Tooth
Recruitment numbers keep going up and up ... but could another sorority come here and be successful?
Delta Phi Epsilon (1927-1932, 1953-1973) presented but wasn't invited to colonize. Sensible decision -- niche group, small nationally, no presence in the state. Alpha Epsilon Phi (1948-1967) wouldn't work for the same reasons. If SDT can barely stay afloat, these two wouldn't cut it at all.
Groups that have never been at Bama before are Alpha Sigma Alpha, Alpha Sigma Tau, Phi Sigma Sigma, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Theta Phi Alpha. All are way too small and unknown outside the South to do well here. Tri Sigma has a chapter at Mizzou, but they're already struggling after being on campus for only a few years.
Alpha Xi Delta (1927-1972, 1981-1988) and Sigma Kappa (1932-1943, 1988-1995) both left campus twice. Not a good precedent, but they're stronger nationally than any of the other groups not on campus.

Alpha Xi Delta's been burned twice at Bama. Expensive both times. They're not considered primo at Auburn. Honestly, I doubt they'll be back. I'd go with Sigma Kappa. I don't think the other sororities treated them any more poorly than any other smaller group. I had heard they had a giant split in the house and the chapter voted to give up their charter. Their national did not want to close them.

AXD has been at Auburn over 30 years, is at chapter total, had a girl on Homecoming Court this year and has a Lilly print. They were the first sorority at JSU and Georgia Tech. Yes, RFM has helped level the playing field. Sigma Kappa does have other chapters in the SEC.

I think alpha xi delta should come on campus first and be followed by sigma kappa a year or two later! They wont have an issue making quota i think! So many girls wanting in a house! The precentage of girls being cut completely from rush increases annually! So many girls would be happy to colonize!

Mallet is a dorm. Used to be all male but now it's co-ed. Generally nerds, geeks, people who dress up as Harry Potter characters, get deep into Dungeons and Dragons etc etc. I have no idea if they select members/residents or what.
SDT has survived because their national gave them leeway, as mentioned above, to do their own thing. The cost of maintaining a house was a big part of it. They used to be in the Alpha Phi house, and in fact owned it until Alpha Phi bought it just a couple of years ago. This year, they have one of the university-owned houses over on new fraternity row. Personally, I hope they eventually come back over to sorority row.

I think that as Greek affairs has strict rules for every aspect of every sorority, i think if SDT is allowed to stay on campus, they should havr to participate in formal recruiment! And honestly, i think they would have better numbers if theyd do recruitment! No one wants to be cut from rush, so theyll be in SDT if thats all they get! But nobody wants to ge cut and be "that girl" who wants greek letter so bad, that she trys to join sdt who isnt even good enough to do fall rush... They need to start from scratch, colonization style. Get your stuff together or go home! We really dont want you to leave UA! But yall deserve the level playing field of rush!

I just don't see any of the NPC chapters not currently at Bama having the money or the name recognition/alumnae support to be successful here. Numbers here are huge, but not insane like they are at Arkansas or Ole Miss, where the largest sororities are now pushing 400 members. A new group might be worth another look if quota hits 150, but who that could be is hard to say.
