does bama need more sororities?

by:

Recruitment numbers keep going up and up ... but could another sorority come here and be successful?

Delta Phi Epsilon (1927-1932, 1953-1973) presented but wasn't invited to colonize. Sensible decision -- niche group, small nationally, no presence in the state. Alpha Epsilon Phi (1948-1967) wouldn't work for the same reasons. If SDT can barely stay afloat, these two wouldn't cut it at all.

Groups that have never been at Bama before are Alpha Sigma Alpha, Alpha Sigma Tau, Phi Sigma Sigma, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Theta Phi Alpha. All are way too small and unknown outside the South to do well here. Tri Sigma has a chapter at Mizzou, but they're already struggling after being on campus for only a few years.

Alpha Xi Delta (1927-1972, 1981-1988) and Sigma Kappa (1932-1943, 1988-1995) both left campus twice. Not a good precedent, but they're stronger nationally than any of the other groups not on campus.

There is most likely room for another sorority and Alpha Xi Delta and Sigma Kappa are probably pretty easily the strongest sororities not already at Bama, so they'd be good bets.

You have to have deep pockets to buy and renovate or build a house. None of those left have deep enough pockets or lots of alumnae who can contribute.

By: Doubt it
by: Alpha Xi Delta

Not 100% sure, but I think they still have a house corporation that owns Gamma Phi Beta's house. Gamma Phi is getting a new house anyway, so if AXiD ever recolonized they'd more than likely have a house to come back to.

Gamma Phi bought their house several years back. However, since they are moving, someone will be able to get that house.

They're not terribly strong nationally.

Hadn't finished my post. Probably after all the sororities at Alabama+SK+AXiD. They aren't the smallest, but they are smaller than most NPC sororities, and they have very little presence in the South.

Was founded as an education sorority, so most of their chapters are at small state schools that used to be teachers' colleges. Their only chapters at big Greek schools are at Mizzou and UNC, but they're bottom tier at both.

They're also at Penn State and UVA, but those chapters are small and struggling.

Alpha Sigma Tau is another NPC sorority that was originally only found at teachers' colleges. Their national headquarters was in Birmingham until a couple of years ago.

Sigma kappa is coming back; my mom is friends with some alumni from both bama and auburn and they said it will be coming back next year

By: Well

Panhellenic will have to vote on whoever comes back, so you can't be 100% sure. That said, I think it'll be between SK and AXiD.

If it's going to be one sorority coming on rather than two, AXiD sounds more likely than Sigma Kappa. AXiD presented but didn't get chosen back when DG and Alpha Phi were announced, but EK didn't even apply to be considered. They reportedly weren't interested due to how badly the chapter was treated by the rest of the Greek system the last time they were open.

I hope sigma kappa comes back! Alabama definitely needs more sororities since so many more girls are coming through rush.

Will AXiD be back for Fall 2013 rush?

By: Grades Matter
by: highly

doubtful SK or AXiD will be back for Fall 2013 rush. It takes about two years to colonize here, and since Panhellenic & the other houses have not voted on either, the soonest they'll be around is probably Fall 2014.

AXD has chapters at Auburn, UAB and JSU. SK only has Auburn. They would have more collegiate and alum support locally.

I think adding another sorority would be a great idea! Rush classes keep growing and as long as the rest of the greek system would cooperate I don't see why it wouldn't work out! they could start at the bottom of course and move their way up! although it is against the normal way to do it, they could accept some girls with grade risks and get a great pledge class of girls who were otherwise cut and from there they would have a good base and could slowly adjust the gpa annually. I see no reason the university of Alabama should not welcome all 26 national PanHellenic sororities (over a long period of time of course) bottom tier or not think a lot of the girls who were dropped from rush would rather a bottom tier sorority than none at all!
