by:

So. I took a extended gap year to travel and do missionary work, and will be entering as a freshman at age 20. I think id be a really good pnm wit her volunteering, good grades, recs and all that jazz. Im just wondering if being 20 will hurt me?? I don't think it lol be a problem reallt but all of a sudden im worrying!!!

It honestly shouldn't be a big deal at all, it's not like you have to bring up your age during rush and if anything you can just use your gap year as a cool experience/conversation topic.

I will say it's a little different as an older pnm (I was a sophomore when I rushed, and one of the only sophomores in my PC) but since you will still technically be a freshman you might not even notice the age difference. I felt a little disconnected from the girls in my PC at first since I had already been through freshman year and wasn't living in the dorms anymore, but this might not even be an issue for you!

I mean you really need to consider everything before you rush. Greek life from the outside looks really fun, and it is, but it will be a completely different experience for you since you're older. I know a two year age difference isn't really that big of a deal, but I mean you need to look at it comparatively to the average time span of a college career... Being twenty and rushing is basically being a junior, age wise, and rushing, which is kind of a big difference. You sound mature, and you may find it hard to make friends with the girls in your pledge class who are similar to you in that manner. Also, the girls in your pledge class may not take easy to the age difference. I know in my pledge class we had a few sophomores and the freshmen didn't really talk to them all that much because it's just kind of weird ya know. Also the girls in my pledge class who were older would hang out with the other older actives since they were already friends.
The sororities here will still want to see your grades btw. Your missionary work will look good, and if you're pretty and wealthy that will help too... Overall I don't mean to try to discourage you, but rush is a legit thing and I just want you to think about what happens after you get a bid, hypothetically saying you do.

There won't be many girls your age in your pledge class, it will mainly be 18 year olds. You need to look at the maturity level and decide if you will have a lot in common with your 18 year old pledge class. Most juniors are 20, and by junior year they may attend a few events but have mainly moved onto a more adult life less parties more bar scene. Also some sororities won't give you a bid because of your age.

OP will be just experiencing everything for the first time as any freshman would. Everything will be new and fun for her! Juniors move on from events not because of their age, but because they have done it for two years already. Plus, being 20 puts OP in the forefront of maturity and she has a better chance for leadership positions in her chapter!

Yeah you have all said the things I've been thinking! So I will be a freshman and am super excited for the freshmen events and the first year experience. Since I have never been to college, I really do think that I'll have a lot in common with my pledge class and freshmen in general. Ugh I'm just not really sure how sororities will see the whole thing haha but I suppose we shall see.. and yeah I definitely won't be wearing my age on my forehead or anything so I really think the difference is minor but I'm open to any other opinions!

So what? She didn't give indication of any negatives. She sounds very interesting and could have a lot to add to a chapter.

I'm just saying, it's kind of taboo to let people who you are on this site, hence the reason why all of y'all didn't't use your real names when commenting...
