southern old money isn't actual old money
by: ActiveWhy are people so petty about whether people come from old money here at Bama? All the old row houses, both sororities and fraternities, claim they only want the best members and that includes members that come from old money... Southern old money that is. But y'all don't realize that the true old money comes from the North. Like I get it, we're in Alabama and y'all want rich kids from in state, but you don't realize the fortune that there is up North. Like the "old money" term originated in the North and was long and well established before it trickled down the coast. Idk I just don't think y'all really understand the economic difference there is between the North and the South and I don't understand why y'all are so biased towards Northerners that come from actual old money...

As someone already said it isn't about the money. It's about the connections and who your people are. That's it. If you ran in the same social circles as the other old row sorority/frat members, went to the same private school, and you are an upstanding person, then you are in. No one looks at the size of your house for that. That isn't to say that people who are from out of state don't get in because they they do! That is a misconception too. It's just that the term old money doesn't really refer to how much money is in your parents bank account, but instead where your people came from and who you know.
May not make sense to an outsider, but that is how it seems to be.

Honestly the true southern old money is not in Alabama. The true old money is in states like Virginia, NC, and SC because of the tobacco industry. Even pre-Civil War, Virginia had the wealthiest plantation owners because of tobacco. Families who have roots in the tobacco industry in the South are typically still very wealthy and have "old money".
