southern old money isn't actual old money
by: ActiveWhy are people so petty about whether people come from old money here at Bama? All the old row houses, both sororities and fraternities, claim they only want the best members and that includes members that come from old money... Southern old money that is. But y'all don't realize that the true old money comes from the North. Like I get it, we're in Alabama and y'all want rich kids from in state, but you don't realize the fortune that there is up North. Like the "old money" term originated in the North and was long and well established before it trickled down the coast. Idk I just don't think y'all really understand the economic difference there is between the North and the South and I don't understand why y'all are so biased towards Northerners that come from actual old money...

Most Southerners will have very few ancestors who arrived after the early 1700s, so their roots are far more likely to be "old" than those or Northerners. There is truth to the notion that few Southerners have the mega-wealth of the North. But you will find that there are many wealthy Southerners whose ancestors had a similar spot in the pecking order of wealth. It fluctuates from generation to generation a bit, but essentially remains the same.
I think Southerners have more land wealth and less income than Northerners. By necessity that have to be more frugal, although we still spend plenty.

I think it is only important in some houses. In most of them it is a concept that is laughed at for the silliness it is. No one with any sense anymore thinks that people who come from old money are superior to those who don't. Most houses are looking more at girls who will be successful in the future, not whose ancestors were successful in the past.

You came to the South to say you are better than the people who live here ??
The cost of living is higher up North so higher income is necessary -- kids from up north tend to come to school here because it is less expensive than the bigger Universities up north.
Part of the charm of BAMA is its huge Greek system and rich traditions.
If you are better than everyone else then why would you care what they think anyway.

In the South it's more about the "old" than about the money -- your social circles, who your "people" are, that kind of thing. A lot of families in, say, Mountain Brook really aren't that rich comparatively speaking, but even if you're a billionaire and you move there, they will freeze you out if they think you're tacky or you don't have "breeding." The snobbery, it burns. LOL

obviously i meant within the U.S. if you actually research old money within America you'd see the most notable areas with the highest confrontation of old money in the country is up north. like if you actually look up areas in the U.S. associated with old money, not one single city/county/state in the south is listed....
