old row???

by: Confused PNM

I heard some girls talking about "go old row" huh? I read on the plaque that ADPi was the second or third on the row, but isn't considered old row? What? And I heard other conversations about a sorority that won't be old row next year that is now? I'm not looking for judgement, I am just honestly confused.

If you don't know about old row, you're not going old row.

more like -- if you don't already know about old row, you would not want to go old row.

It's a term for the most exclusive, most in-demand sororities and fraternities. It's also a location - the fraternities on the west side of University Boulevard, where all the fraternities were in the 1930s-1960s, AND it's an organized underground group of fraternities and sororities that pay for a big beer and band party that only their members get to attend.

Old Row members sometimes fluctuate - they quit the group or join the group (the beer party group).

ADPi isn't old row, they've made too many mistakes to be in the group now. and phi mu won't be next year since they won't be able to afford it

ADPi can't have a sponsorship by Budweiser per National. They sold their O.R. To Phi Mu. Which kind of says a lot about the value of OR

How much does it cost and why do you think phi mu can't afford it ?

Over 50% is OOS now. Who don't care about "old row", being with their HS best friends, and Alabama connections. Nor do they care about Bud sponsorship. Ra Ra for old row, but mostly if you're from Alabama. Ra Ra for new row, but mostly if you're from OOS. All the houses are great. Only freshman PNMs and moms care anyway. And some alumni still living in the past. Keep an open mind and your forever home will find you.

Exactly. Nobody cares. The term is very irrelevant nowadays.

What mistakes have they made? And how much is it to be Old Row?

"sold their OR" - that's a new one on me. You either pay the fees to be Old Row or you don't.
Don't know exactly how much, but a few thousand dollars, and it has to be collected directly from members. Most houses have rules about not spending chapter funds on alcohol.
Phi Mu can't afford it? LOLOLOL!!!

Jen is 100% correct. Old Row doesn't have "spots" that are sold. Any sorority can be an Old Row house. It's just that most of their national offices forbid their chapters from being sponsored by an alcoholic beverage. Zeta and DG are that way to name a couple examples.

only new row thinks it irrelevant, and its because they're jealous. old row has all the best houses and always will. The standard of living is just better in old row houses

Old Row refers to the OLDEST UA fraternities and where they were located. Newer fraternities were given land behind University Boulevard to build their houses on, hince NEW ROW. They are newer houses and therefore less prestigious than the older fraternities.
There are NO OLD ROW sororities. YES, some sororities were asked to sponsor an "OLD ROW" party and they paid to participate. This does not mean they are OLD ROW sororities, they just participated in a party.
NOW, there are "FIRST CIRCLE" sororities and they are KD, DDD, and AGD. They were given this name because their houses were located on First Circle. Among those in the know, it makes these houses more prestigious.

"First Circle" may be a cherished phrase to KD, DD, and AGD, but it's been an obsolete term for at least 3 decades.
Ever hear anybody talk about "Second Circle" these days?
Right. Obsolete.
Have a great time in your little fantasy world!

You can't just join old row or sell your spot to someone else. It doesn't have anything to do with how big your house is or if you have a swimming pool or Budweiser. Old row is just considered the upper tier here. Every school has tiers whether you agree with it or not. The OR sororities are the ones that will have to make the most cuts. For some reason people not in an OR sorority or frat are just obsessed with OR and explaining it away, but the people who are OR don't obsess about it. Just pledge the sorority you like and fit in with.

Actually Alabama is probably the one school where "old row" doesn't just refer to upper tier- there are actually extra dues associated with being old row, and it WAS sponsored by Budweiser for a long time (haven't you seen the shirts?) however I don't think Budweiser is involved anymore. Personally I've never understood why sororities pay the fee- monster formal is only for the old row guys. Girls have to be invited to go.

My mom was also in an "OR" sorority, and everyone knew who the OR frats and sororities were then. That was a long time before shirts and $$ for OR parties, and a long time before so many people were OOS.

Every school has perceived tiers. That's what OR is for sororities. I get that it seems snobby, but only the people who don't feel included seem to obsess about it. Like I said, just pledge where you feel like you will be happy and don't worry about it, whether that is old row or new row.

Don't worry about the rankings on this site either, because it seems like only the people who are in a lower tier but want to be in a higher tier worry about rankings. \n\n\n\n\n

After college, the perceived "tiers" don't matter anyway. if you and the person you're talking to were Greek, you have some common knowledge that some don't.
Unless you live in a tiny, microscopic suburb of the biggest city in Alabama.

Yeah there seems to be a lot of obsessing here about MB too.

if anyone, whether an active or a pnm or a mom, think that the sorority letters you wear will determine your happiness or value or social standing, that person is a shallow loser imo and participating in greek life for the wrong reasons.
