Does this school feel elite?
by: incoming fresh
Got rejected from HYPS, Penn, Columbia, UChicago, you know the deal. I went to private school in the Midwest and I really don't want to sound like a prick but I want to feel like I'm at an elite institution. I'm not part of Cornell Engineering or Architecture which I suppose is what most makes Cornell elite. The other schools I got into are Michigan, WashU and Northwestern. From my visit to Northwestern, I really got that elite vibe that schools like Harvard have. Cornell, WashU and Michigan did not have that. But, for good reasons, I felt the enormous size of Cornell, the proliferation of random departments like Food Science and Hotel Admin, and just the overall social scene offered that Cornell will be more like going to a good state school like Michigan (my home state).
Is the social scene interesting here at least? Are there intelligent kids here beyond CS/engineering/architecture? Are there exclusive frats/societies here? I have stereotypes of Cornell but I've also visited and spoken with folks and Cornell feels sub-elite.

There is a similar post on Cornell Reddit about this -maybe related? I don’t think you found a single thing you liked about Cornell. Go to Northwestern because it feels “elite” to you or better yet -UMich your home state because you’ll save a lot of money if money is an issue.

I chose Cornell over Mich and Washu. My dream school was Northwestern but was rejected. If I were you, I'd pick Northwestern mainly because its in the Midwest and that might be more familiar to you since you're from Michigan. I know exactly what you mean about Northwestern feeling more "Elite". I can assure you that about 50% of Cornell is at the eliteness tier of Northwestern if not higher. There is a lot of elite aspects of Cornell, but you have to work harder to integrate yourself into that here than say Northwestern. The weather in Ithaca and Evanston are about the same too but you'll have access to Chicago. My aunt is a prof at Northwestern so I really am familiar with both schools. I'm also from Illinois so I was always biased towards Northwesern from the get go lol.
I do think you should talk to some kids who go to Cornell tho first. I did that and I found Cornell to be wayy better than Mich and Washu. This was just an honest answer, good luck. you are kind of a prick tho lmao

From what I've realized from friends, unless you go to Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, UPenn, Columbia, UChicago and maybe Duke, you are pretty much getting the same education as a good public school like Michigan UCLA or Berkeley. It's the hard truth. Northwestern is not in this topmost category, accept that first. I'd choose Michigan for the price over Cornell and Northwestern unless there's something more specific about Northwestern or Cornell that you like.

i do and i think a lot of folks do who worked their asses off to get into an elite school. i've realized many students are Cornell are just content to be here and study things like Agriculture, Hotel and Labor relations(?). even the business program (dyson) is skewed towards kids who were aiming lower i.e. not harvard mit princeton wharton etc
