Should I suicide bid?

by:

Obviously, this depends on if my top house prefs me or not but I was wondering if it is a good idea to suicide bid. Personally, I am not really a fan of any other srat that I have left and don't want to do it just for the sake of it. But I heard from other pnms that suicide bidding a srat will make it less likely that you will receive a bid, so I'm kinda nervous to do so. Any advice?

No, you’ll be putting yourself at risk for getting no bids at all. When you go to pref round, just be completely honest with your houses and say “I really like you, I plan on putting you first” and “I appreciate you inviting me back, but I am going to put my other house first”

r u sure it doesn't sound weird/isn't against the rules to tell the srat this during pref?

Wait I'm confused. I didn't make this post but I'm in the same situation- I really like my first house and would def accept the bid, but I really don't like the second house and if I were to get this house on bid day I would probably drop immediately. Like I'd rather not be in a srat than be in this house. Should I suicide bid?

i’m in the same situation too. does suiciding reduce your chances at the house u prefer or r your chances for that house the same whether or not u rank a second house?

So basically there is an A list and a B list of pnms that they wanna give bids to. If your #1 has you on their A list you match but if they don’t then the algorithm tries to match you to your #2 and their A list… if you dont match again and you wrote both then it repeats for their B lists and if you don’t match either you become a quota addition. But if you don’t write both and you aren’t on your #1 A list then you don’t get a bid. The system rewards you for doing the process all the way through

But I’m pretty sure if you suicide and don’t get a bid you can still cob

Questions about A lists and B lists…

1) Do all sororities at Cornell use this system?

2) If a bunch of girls on a given sorority’s A list rank a different sorority first and get into that other sorority, are girls from the original sorority’s B list “bumped up” to the A list to replace the spots these girls occupied in the A list.

3) Do most girls who are preferred make it on either the A or B list or do a significant amount make it on neither?

4) Is there a way to respectfully let the sorority u rank second that u would prefer to be on their B list because you probably wouldn’t accept a bid from them/you are much more interested in the first sorority and are only ranking both to increase your chances of getting a bid from the first?

1) yes most schools use this algorithm for recruitment
2)yes girls get bumped up if other girls on the A list had matched to different choices. the system wants every chapter to get to quota
3) if you make it to pref you fall somewhere on their bid list, whether its a or b or how high depends on how they felt about you. Not matching refers to not matching before they hit quota so you would still be on the lists just an add on to quota.
4) I guess you could let them know but i know for at least my chapter we didn’t score pnms after pref. I assume if you told them that they could move you down to the bottom of the list

If you’re going to reject a bid from your other house if they offer, you might as well suicide bid

Yeah. There’s plenty of girls that will be happy to get a bid so don’t take a spot from them

Suiciding reduces your chances of getting a house PERIOD. Ask Panhellenic, they'll tell you this. Put both, but be honest to your houses if you're in this position.

Not my post, but I’m kind of in the same situation and I would rather not be in a house at all than be in my second choice house. Does me keeping my second choice house increase my chances of getting the house I actually want?

Yes. It statistically makes you more likely to end up in either and therefore both houses. Plus, if PHC has to intervene for any reason and manually sort girls into houses, they are clear about the fact that they prioritize girls with both houses preffed, meaning that they were more involved, invested and desired
