Decline of greek life measured

by:

A few details: Membership percentages in Greek houses in 2009 was 33.15% of the total undergrad male population, with 47 members on average (50 chapters fell under the “fraternity” designation, but that includes MGLCs – accounting for their typically small number, the reduction is to 42 chapters, then the IFC average is about 54 members).

For 2020, there were 28 IFC chapters, I don't know the exact membership numbers, but lower than 2005.

For 2005, there were 40 IFC chapters, and an average of about 47 members per house (fraternity membership was 28.75%).

For 1983, there were 50 IFC chapters, and an average in the low 50s. The chapters that existed in 1983 that don’t today are

Phi Alpha Omega, a small collegetown-based fraternity started around 1982 and gone by 1986.

Triangle, down to eleven members. Their national would shut them down by 1985.

Phi Kappa Sigma, which closed in 1990. They had 35 members in 1983.

Phi Sigma Epsilon, which merged on the national level with Phi Sigma Kappa in 1985, closing the Cornell chapter. It had 73 members in 1983.

Psi Upsilon, we know what happened

Phi Kappa Psi, again we know

Sigma Nu, kicked off for hazing

Alpha Tau Omega, kicked off by nationals

Tau Epsilon Phi (TEP), kicked off for hazing

Delta Phi (Llenroc), hazing again

Sigma Phi Epsilon , hazing

Seal and Serpent, active, but not IFC recognized

Theta Xi, couldn't compete

Kappa Alpha Society, couldn't compete

Fiji, alcohol violations

SAE, hazing

Probably more I'm missing

Can't forget about TKE lol

Fun fact when TKE first came to Cornell it failed. A local fraternity called Scorpion ended up joining with TKE later on to form the Scorpion chapter of TKE

Any more info on the origins and fall of Phi Alpha Omega and Triangle? Seems pretty interesting how these small localish frats even get started and what their motivations were

Think triangle might have just been lack of members. They were limiting membership to people who majored in STEM out of which kids interested in greeklife were already limited.

Triangle Fraternity is an intentional fraternity with 38 active chapters was developed under an interesting premise. The fraternity was open to architects, “scientists”, and engineers. For example, an atmospheric science major could join, but a hotelie could not. Nor could biology students, for that matter. I’m sure it made for interesting arrangements in deciding if certain individuals were eligible. Regardless of the complexities of their membership, the fraternity resided at 112 Edgemoor until they folded in 1985 under order of their National, because their numbers were so low at Cornell (we’re talking single digits here). Today, 112 Edgemoor is a 21-person dorm owned by the university

I don’t have much info on Phi Alpha Omega, only that they existed for a very short period in the 80’s.

There still is I believe one local college town fraternity left in SCD which was founded in 1981. You can still find their website, but it has not been updated in a while.

Sigma Chi Delta. Their house was at 307 Wait Avenue which is right by Zeta Psi. Not sure if their house is still there since the website looks very out of date. Also to note that Seal and Serpent is a local fraternity, but is obviously not in C-Town.

Kinda funny you still see SCD in many rankings considering it probably doesn't exist anymore.

It's only a matter of time before every chapter gets kicked off and only Deke remains.

Theta Chi got kicked off for hazing in the '90s. Their pledges joined AEPi, and got AEPi kicked off in 2001, though AEPi successfully recolonized a few years later.

Same thing that happened when TKE took SAE's pledges in 2011; it just got TKE kicked off the next year. And then they repeated the same mistake when they took SigEp's pledges after SigEp got kicked.

Fun fact Theta Chi's house is now Alpha Xi Delta house. They also originally were the Phi Sigma Epsilon Fraternity until in the 1980s when the national organization at Phi Ep merged with Phi Sigma Kappa. Cornell was the only school that had both chapters so the Phi Ep brothers ended up changing national orgs to Theta Chi.

Theta Chi also attempted a recolonization in 2003, but it failed rather quickly.
