Why are Rankings so Rigid Here?

I have a few friends going to SEC schools, some of them joined bottom frats and it doesn't seem to impact their social lives. Why is it that in state/SEC schools, even the lowest frat has solid social prospects, but at Cornell, everything below mid is irrelevant?
