How Difficult is it to Join a Mid or Higher House?

by:

For rush, I plan on casting a wide net and checking out a bunch of houses. However, I want to rush houses that are mid and up because I want to join a house that's socially relevant and has a consistent mixing schedule and events and stuff like that. I'm just wondering how competitive it is if I limit myself to mid and up houses, and whether I should also check out lower mid and lower houses as a backup.

depends how you strategize your rush. As is well known, the higher you go the harder it is to get bids. Lower and bottom houses will generally give bids to almost anyone who comes unless you seriously blow (which case you might have other problems). Wrote a post about rush in how rush breaks down if you want to read it and included my estimates on how many bids a house usually gives.
In general just rush across tiers and allocate time to every house. You are not gonna end up with a bid if you spend all your time in contacts at a top or upper house and suddenly go to a mid or upper mid after first contacts when you get cut. In general for the relevant houses, you have to have gotten a first contact otherwise they will not continue with you unless you are really dope. A sample rush strategy below:
You are a soft, chiller who is slightly preppy. Rush the following houses, Sig Phi, DX, Sig Pi, Chi Psi, PSK, Phi Tau.
Go to all their smokers and as many night events you get invited to. Don't blow off PSK, Phi Tau and not go to a single invite only or night event in anticipation of getting an invite from the top 4. Manage your time strategically

would also add say for that sample that I put is this is how it breaks down in terms of numbers. Just rough estimates, but gives you an idea of how selective each house is.
House - Starting Kids/2nd Contacts/Bids
Sig Phi - 400/40/20
Sig Pi - 300/60/25
DX - 250/70/40
Chi Psi - 300/60/30
Phi Tau - 125/40/25
PSK - 125/50/30

I saw the other post and someone mentioned that if you've gotten a 2nd contact, you'll likely get a bid. What are some circumstances where you get cut after second contacts/why would you get cut after 2nd contacts?

Not the case at all. Second contacts generally just mean you are being seriously considered. Know quite a few guys who were dirty rushed and got 2nd contacts at top through upper mid houses in my time at all. Just because you get a second contact does not mean you have the bid. It means you will 100% be getting invites to the night events at that point if you had not before and you will get the chance to interact with bros in a more intimate setting as opposed to zoom.
Big one that has dinged guys after 2nd contacts at least in my frat is drinking at night events. Yeah we wanna get messed up and have fun but if you can't control yourself and do or say something that is messed up, we will think about how if that happens in the future if you become a brother and that happens. Have fun but know your limits and don't try to impress anyone if you think you can't handle it.
Every house inevitably has cuts after 2nd contacts. Generally at least 40-60% of dudes will get cut depending on the house. The bar keeps getting higher for each phase. Maybe only a 60% bar is needed for 1st contact, 70% for 2nd, and 80% for a bid. Brothers argue for and against kids and if you piss off a brother by saying something messed up, he will bring that up in delibs and it will hurt you if it sways enough guys. Just be chill and cool.

P much every interaction you have with anyone in the house will be brought up and discussed at the bid stage. And at that point, especially for relevant houses a single transgression or a couple of pissed off brothers can mess it up.
