sorority is superficial. period

by:

I'm a graduating senior in a mid tier house. I used to be really hyped about greek life my freshman year but I have been deactivated since junior spring. I really don't like how people gaslight freshman by constantly talking about "sense of community" and "sisterhood". Admit it this world is shallow. We are all fun seeking young adults and unfortunately we are insecure. The so called community is more like a clout. Every girl wanted to get into core 4. Every girl wanted to be attractive and tbh guys care about attractiveness more than you think. I did have plenty of fun and met more new people, but I actually have met more amazing people in my clubs, my major(a small humanity major) and classes. I see my friends in sorority more as a social group, and most of my really close friends who are not even in greek life. In retrospect I still don't regret rushing bc otherwise i wouldn't be able to go out as much. Based on my observation, girls join sorority for fun, insta photos, clout, meet guys etc. My sorority is considered an "alternative" one and we have a reputation of being diverse and valuing personalities over other shallow metrics. This is what appealed to me in the first place. But I later found out a lot of the "alternative girls" are actually very insecure about their body type and they turn this insecurity into bullying skinny girls even some geed girls. I also don't think people from different backgrounds, specifically socio economic classes get along as people would imagine. Also the insta photos are fake. people who act like sisters in the photo are not always friends with each other. Anyway this late night post is very disorganized, and as a senior I'm just reflecting on my 4 yrs

I don’t want to take away from your negative experience but you’re being too general to say people are “gaslighting” freshmen. Everyone knows rush is superficial; there’s a dress code, the recruitment chairs have to stick to a script, and everyone— members and PNMs— dresses their very best and does their makeup. Rush is a superficial process, sure. But I’ve met girls in my house that will be friends for life. I feel like I have a home for the first time ever— a place where I am welcome, where I can be myself, and where I’m celebrated. Not everyone feels that way— not even close to it. But Greek life does SO much more than highlight the superficiality of life, or give you a time and a place each week to drink. I’m also in a house that people say is on the “faker” side, and maybe it looks like that from the outside, but I’ve honestly never been a part of anything more real. I respect you and what you’ve faced, but there are some really positive things to be said about Greek life too. Everyone, especially freshmen, should know that.

same girl same. So much fakeness about sisterhood. I have a couple real friends in my sorority but the rest are just people to party with or to avoid

Tbh after I went through the first round of recruitment I didn’t want 3/4 of C4 houses because they were just awk and I didn’t like them.

The friendships I’ve made at my sorority are extremely genuine and will probably last me the rest of my life. Sorry you had your experience but that doesn’t mean everyone had the same one as you

I do agree with what you’re saying. I think since I went to into Greek life with such low expectations, I was pleasantly surprised to see that I did make more real friends than I thought I would and that it helped me in ways I wouldn’t have imagined. Freshman year, I was homesick, depressed, and close to being sent home on academic leave. Greek life gave me a sense of purpose. While I do plan to deactivate in the future, I don’t regret it at all either. Idk, I’m usually a really negative half glass empty person, but Greek life pleasantly surprised me and entertained me many times too.

don't know why everyone's getting defensive. op didn't say this was everyone's experience just theirs and it's helpful to hear greek life isn't for everyone sometimes people grow and realize it's not for them anymore. it's toxic to pretend greek life is great for everyone and this can make pnms and people leaving their sororitys feel less alone
