sororities at usc have have no point for existing
by: Seriously
Sororities at USC literally have no point besides a chance for girls to get letters and put themselves in a group apart from other girls. Think about it.
- The average class in a sorority is 100+ girls... How are you supposed to get to know the names and backgrounds of 100 other people in a short amount of time? Sororities at USC are not "sisterhoods", they are ALL cliquey because they're huge. Smaller sororities at other shools are not like this. There is a reason fraternities don't take 100+ people, it would completely ruin any potential brotherhood aspect.
- No hazing or pledging - How are you supposed to get to know your "sisters" if you aren't made to do things together as a pledge class? One "sisterhood retreat" doesn't count.
- Sororities don't hold tailgates, and sorority functions suck - Almost everyone can agree on this. Fraternity functions are way more fun than sorority functions, I wonder why that is? Maybe it's because everyone in a fraternity actually knows each other and the girls come along for the ride? What is the point of sororities anyways?
Sororities that are 300+ members can't possibly have a sisterhood. You'll have girls who are wearing THE EXACT SAME LETTERS walk past each other every day without even glancing at each other or saying "hello". You cannot possibly believe in a sisterhood when you have so many girls in the same sorority that literally don't even know each other besides adding one another on facebook.

I was a freshman last year who lived in Patterson, and this is so not true. When I joined my sorority I instantly was thrown into a pool of awesome girls to choose from as friends. My sorority had meetings and fun short gatherings for us multiple times a week for the first month. I immediately ended up in a group of friends based on different mutual connections (friends from home, suite mates, hall mates, same classes) and we all had pregames together, ate together, went to the same functions, ran errands together and would even go on short trips with each other to visit hometowns within a couple months of knowing eachother. This group expanded from about 15 girls to a larger group of about 40. Obviously it took awhile to know EVERYONE, but that is not the sororities or the girls fault, that's USC's fault for not taking the initiative sooner to expand, not that it really matters to me at the end of the day. By the end of the first semester I knew every face and name in my pledge class. I know my bigs entire group of friends and all of my friends bigs. In sororities here you still have sisterhood and make lifelong bonds but no, you are not going to know every single junior and senior unless you have a reason too like they're on exec. And no, you're not going to be best friends with all 100+ girls because you can't be. This post and it's comments are pretty stupid over all in my opinion though. If we didn't have sororities your fraternities would be pretty useless as well.

Maybe the reason you don't understand sororities is because you're not in one. It's about having somewhere you feel you belong-- somewhere where you know that people will love and support you. You don't see how sororities interact with each other at meal times-- it's probably a lot different than what you perceive as an outsider.
Don't EVER insinuate that hazing is the only way to form true bonds with someone. This is completely backwards, moronic, and crazy. "Oh yeah, we got married cause we got hazed together so our bond was unlike any other." Yeah no.
Sorority functions suck because the sororities are so large that they're all under a strict eye from their national organizations. Sorority functions also suck because the FSL office here is much stricter than at other schools (cough Alabama), and sorority functions suck because they want to stay on campus. Sororities don't hold tailgates because there are rules against using chapter funds for the purchase of alcohol.
You'll also have girls wearing the exact same letters that say hi to each other or smile at each other. Let's just say all 4000 sorority women don't have a sisterhood because I see a few that don't say hi. Everyone's entitled to having a bad day.
While yes, I agree that the sororities are much too large, you've forgotten the entire purpose of greek life. Our founders intended for our organizations to make us better men and women-- to live up to higher standards, to have principles, and to (cont).

You sir, are a fool for thinking it's a man's job to understand the way females work. Girls are different with their friends than guys - they don't want to haze/wrestle each other, they're just cattier with each other by nature, etc.
I don't understand the way girls work either but they make girls so happy and allow girls to meet the best friends they'll have forever.
Girls could easily say "oh i don't get frats why would you want to go through pledging or limit yourself to just hanging out with the 30 kids in your pledge class". It's just different for us.

I do agree that our sororities here are too large. One of my best friends from home pledged last year at Clemson. I think she said her class had 35 girls in it. They have less girls going through rush because they are a smaller school, but they also have 1 more sorority than we do. It doesn't make sense. Why have we been so slow to add sororities? I do think the benefits of greek life outweigh the cons. I feel the sisterhood is real.

You realize you literally just said that you guys were cliquey and you don't know everyone. Usc is honestly sorority wise one of the worst schools. There is no point other than people want letters. You aren't friends and most of the people in Greek life here would be cut at other schools
