here's my take

by: UpstateGirl

I'm from upstate SC and I know a lot of KA's. A lot of the coolest guys from my HS went KA and for that reason I still think they're top tier. I completely understand why girls who come to USC from other areas (especially VA/MD/NC) would think pi kapp and chi psi are better - because they know more boys from HS in those frats and they can have big open parties to get their name out to everyone which KA can't do because of probation.

IMO it all just comes down to the connections you have/who you know here and that's why I say KA is still top tier despite not being able to have the big open parties. After all, it aint like Sigma Nu is all about throwing down either.

IMO
SAE, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu and KA are all top tier because they come from areas where they know the most girls/guys coming to or already at SC and that makes them the most popular.

Pi Kapp and Chi Psi (two frats I still love!) definitely have equally cool members and awesome socials but they don't automatically have quite as many friends and connections as the top top tiers do. That's why they're upper middle.

Beta and Phi Sig to me seem to be the two fraternities that get so/so guys but none of them really know anyone at USC to begin with which is why you don't see as many people at their parties.

TL;DR, it's all who you know
SAE/SX/SNU/KA
PKP/XP
PSK/BTP
ATO/LXA/AEPi

now THIS is exactly right and what some of the try hard tfm type boys in beta and lambda need to understand. It's all about how many people at the bar know you and want to come up and talk to you when you and your entourage walk in.

Thats why the top tiers have the most in-state kids, that's why the upper middle tiers take kids from alternative areas that still send a lot of kids to USC (nova, annapolis, even ohio) and thats why the kids without connections end up in the lower frats, because all that matters is how many people you know and who you can bring around.

It's obvious that Beta is not considered to be the "top of the top", but I really don't understand all the hate for them. There are so many worse fraternities at USC and yet Beta is still the one everyone seems to love to make fun of. Back in the day Beta was absolutely terrible and filled with the weirdest of boys, but since my freshman year I started hanging out with a few and can definitely say they have changed a hell of a lot. They might not be my absolute favorite fraternity but they are definitely up there on my list. They are the nice guys who seem to care a lot about each other, grades, and treating girls right- which I just can't see as a bad thing. They might be different than other fraternities in certain aspects, but I still enjoy them and am sad to see they are losing their house.

See here's the thing, I completely agree with all of that and I think it sucks to see them build so much just to lose their house and risk having to be set back another few years but as organized and smart as they are over there I think they'll find a way back on campus. After all there's an open house on the block right now.

With that being said I also see why everyone hates on them just because of their presence on this website. They probably aren't better than Phi Sig and aren't going to be an upper middle anytime soon. That doesn't really matter to anyone but they really shouldn't keep coming on here trying to think of different ways to phrase tiers/rankings or making cases to help them climb up some social ladder and bring down other organizations in the process.

TL;DR if Beta shuts tf up and just does them no one will hate on them.

fwiw, not "their house". uscfsl destroyed fraternities that had been here for 75+ years and replaced them with groups like beta (or name any other fraternity that showed up in the last 5 years). even if we give credit to beta for being decent, and fine, they aren't the worst thing in the entire world, they have no claim to the house or being an historic fraternity here.

they claim 18something as their charter date, but the truth is they were only on campus for like two years before everyone went to war and they were done FOREVER. coming back 150 years later they should not be able to claim anything having to do with that original group.

beta started at usc whenever their recharter date is - like 2009 or something. saying anything else is disrespectful to the fraternities that have been here, ie sae, sigmachi, snu, ka, pikapp, chipsi, and they ones that preceeded them in death - ato, sigep, and ks (not dead?).

@nbd
It doesn't matter, maybe Lambda Chi can hold a grudge because their house was being inhabited by another group but I'm suuuure none of those other fraternities waste their time being offended or feeling 'disrespected' that a newer fraternity is making strides. What is everyone supposed to stop rushing if they don't get a bid to the top 6 just because you find it disrespectful?
