tiers

by:

It seems like everyone is obsessed with sorority tiers. What exactly makes a sorority top vs. middle or bottom tier? Is this based on looks alone? Or how long a sorority has been on campus? Maybe grades or chapter size? It seems like everyone has their own opinion and y'all like to argue over this. A little enlightenment please for us confused PNMs. Thanks

They'll try to tell you it's based on sisterhood and involvement, but what it really comes down to is who has cuter girls.

Isn't that shallow? What about personality? To me, the top 6 all look the same, they all have very pretty girls. How do you know where you fit in?

I agree it's shallow, but know that joining a chapter because you want to be in a certain tier is not the way to go. When you go through recruitment make sure you take notice of the conversations you're having with the girls in each house. Look for the ones that are most genuine and where you connect more. That's how you'll be able to find where you best fit. At the end of it all you should have found a place where you feel comfortable and belong, not somewhere where you think you're better than someone because of your letters.
Trust the system and follow it and you'll end up where you're supposed to be.

Oh and as far as differentiating top vs middle vs bottom, they all have spectacular girls it's just that top houses typically have the most, then middle have a good bit, then bottom have less. Upper middle/Middle tier houses hate to admit that top houses have a larger number of better girls and act like they're shallow but it's true.

You're kidding right? Every sorority has spectacular girls. Each sorority looks for different things, and that doesn't always mean it is skin deep. No girl is "better" than another, and if that's your attitude about it then you might need to take a long look at yourself in the mirror.

So lots of factors come into play deciding the tiers. It looks to me that we each have to form our own opinions during Rush as to who we think are top, middle and bottom. After all, this is just someone's opinion. And it seems like everyone on here has their own one. Also, we need to judge a sorority by the feeling we get during the Rush parties, not based on what tier they are. Thanks for the advice. I do have another question tho...how does a sorority know if your family has money? I'm coming from out of state.

They don't know that or focus all of their attention on it, there are rich and not rich girls in every house. Don't worry about that part, just represent yourself the best you can and have confidence.

In this day and age with so many sororities and fraternities being < 5 years old, history at USC is also a major factor for both.

Go thru Rush and make up your own mind. This subject has been fought over for years. I would just say that there's a top 6 here and a bottom 6. You decide during Rush what you think and where you belong. And don't base your decision on what tier the sorority is in.
