formal dinner

What's formal dinner like and how do you know which one to go to (if you've been invited to more than one)? Also, what happens to those that haven't been invited to formal dinner?

If it's fraternity rush, it means you're getting a nice meal, and being offered a bid. So you go to the one you think you'll accept the bid to join. Guys don't like if you don't show up to their formal dinner. If it's for girls, I got no clue.
