living in the house

I think this could apply to both sororities and fraternities, but I have a few questions about living in the house.

Who gets to live in the house? Is it random? Are they hand picked?

Is it safe to guess that pledges do not live in the house?

Every house might have their own way of doing it. Usually its a group of people interested in living in the house and if its too much then they resort to randomizing. Someone specifically involved could give you a better answer though.
