Upperclassmen Bids
by: 2001I plan on transferring to uga next year as a junior and being in a sorority has been my dream. What advice do you have for upperclassmen rushing?

Be open to all of the houses. Every house here is great and it's worth it to be a member, no matter what the letters are.
The people who have the worst rushes are the people who take this website seriously, have a superiority complex, and/or have their hearts set on a certain subset of houses.
Fact is that you can't tell anything from recruitment. Some houses put on a better recruitment than others yes. They have more extroverts and people who are more polished at speaking. However, that doesn't tell you what your experience being a sister there will be like. Recruitment isn't real life.

I know you're a transfer, but even so it's really hard to get a bid as an upperclassman. Not impossible, just extremely difficult.
So my best advice is to:
- Use this year to get your GPA up as high as possible.
- Get some leadership experience in clubs on your current campus. Organize events and things for existing clubs or start a club.
- Get off this website and be open to all the houses. Your goal should be to get into a sorority. Period. All sororities at UGA are great and will give you lifelong friendships and the same opportunities. So consider yourself lucky if you get any bid at all and take the opportunity that is given to you at the house that has chosen you.

You need to be open to each and every house. We have an upperclassman quota so it's not impossible to get in. But you still need trust the process, take the bid that you get, and trust that the sisters who chose you see you as fitting into their house. That's honestly how it is for all PNMs, but as an upperclassman things are more competitive so it's even more important to keep that in mind.
As the person above said, put in the effort to get 1-2 recs for each house.
Reason being: UGA has so many PNMs that the quickest cuts are made because someone doesn't have requirements, whether these are officially disclosed or not. So the quickest cuts are made because of low GPA and because of not having rec letters for that house.
You cannot afford to be cut for those reasons being that some sororities are already going to cut you for being a junior. I know it's unfair, but sororities prefer younger members because they can get more semesters of dues $ out of them. It's impersonal and it's harsh, but it's the truth.
Also if it doesn’t work out for you, I promise there are a billion other things you can get involved with on campus!

And get recs from alumnae for each house. Ask anyone you think may have been in a sorority. Connect with local alumnae chapters for each house at UGA and ask. As a last resort, reddit r/sororities has a Recs Megathread which you can use to contact alumnae volunteer to write recs for girls going through rush.
You will want 1-2 recs from alumnae for each house. Only alumnae for that sorority can write recommendations for their house. So you will need separate people writing you rec letters for each house.
This means getting a total 19-38 alumnae recs (like I said 1-2 per chapter!). I know this may be time consuming.
I would recommend connecting with alumnae starting in late winter 2021 so you have plenty of time, since it can take a while to get a rec letter out of someone and you will need them by summer.
DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP as it is extremely important, especially since you will be a junior!
