pref night

TCU's website says that the active girls wear black and white dresses on pref night so PNMs should go for a colored dress... How important is this?

Just make this your most formal outfit. A lot of chapters do wear white or black so if you have another choice you might want to go with that. However, your dress color isn't going to make or break you. Good luck!

This is your most formal night and a lot of girls do avoid black and white because many houses to have actives wear one or the other. A classic, solid colored dress would be perfect.

I would stay awayfrom black or white for the final night not because it will hurt your bid but it can feel awkward to be dressed as a active when your not and you can't know what houses you will end up with.
