appropriate conversations?

by: bonalea

My Christina Faith is very important to me. Is it appropriate to bring that up during Rush?

In recruitment, you have only a few minutes with each girl. I would hesitate to use those few minutes to talk about anything that doesn't come up organically. If you're asked why you came to TCU and you came here because of your religion, you could mention it then but then drop it. Don't witness to the girl who asked. Just say because it is a Christian school and drop it. If asked about a Christian mission during the summer, say you went to Honduras with your church on a mission trip. Then talk about the people there, the work you did, etc. Don't witness. It's not appropriate or useful during a short recruitment party. There will be plenty of time later when you get to know the girls in your sorority to witness if you feel called to do it. But I personally would vote against someone who brought up religion and tried to save me on skit day.

There are many people who choose TCU because it is supposedly a Christian school. If you've done mission work, ministry work or other things that are important parts of your resume you shouldn't be afraid to mention it! That is who you are and if a how cuts you for it they weren't right for you anyway. On the other hand this probably isn't the first thing you say when introducing yourself. Let the conversation flow naturally and end up with sisters based on who you really are.

if you have done mission work in Central America, don't go on and on about it - most people at TCU have done mission work there, and frankly, it is a bit old. Certainly not original. One of my best friends is from Central America and they laugh at all the missionaries. Sorry but true.

If a group hold against me that I might mention my Christian faith I wouldn't want to be their sister anyway. How disappointing to learn a school with Christian in its name might respond like that. I chose to spend the money to attend a private Christian university for that reason. I hope I won't find out I might have well have hone somewhere like UTA or Tech. That's sure not how they sale this school.

You grow up. I could have gone to a state school for 1/5 the price and gotten just as good of an academic education. I came here for the C in TCU.

People usually don't open a conversation with their faith but if it fits in during the conversation be yourself just like you would be about any other topic. Be polite but real.

I think this thread is a very good example of why religion should be a topic to avoid bringing up during recruitment. Everyone has a different response, some good and some bad. It is easier to not bring it up, if unrelated to the conversation, and avoid an awkward conversation than to try to struggle through one. Additionally, if religion does come up naturally in the conversation, feel free to talk about! If it doesn't come up, don't worry about it. As stated in other posts, there are religious girls in EVERY sorority so finding like minded people after recruitment will not be a problem.

People need to stop spewing hate at people for asking questions! You did the same when a girl who is large asked if she had a chance at getting a house. You make us sound like horrible, hate filled people.
It is unlikely any girl is going to carry her bible into recruitment and peach at anyone! That is crazy!! It does sound like some girls wondered if when talking about themselves they could mention their church based volunteer work etc. Maybe you are in a house that would cut a girl for that or maybe you personally hate Christians. The truth is you choice a private Christian university. No one is encouraging anyone to preach but she should be free to be herself. Stop hating!!

I have a strong faith and many of my sisters do too. We even go to church together and have a bible study in our house. Even with this being my personal belief I suggest you keep this topic low key during recruitment. There isn't a way to know how the girl you are talking to feels so just keep things on light topics. You will have chances to grow your faith once recruitment is over.
