How do you get a snap bid?

by: question

Sorry to switch the topic from all the bashing going around but how does someone get a snap bid? Is that the same thing as COB?

They are different. Snap bid: on the morning of bid day, If a chapter did not meet quota they will be given an opportunity to “snap up” someone they cut during recruitment who has since dropped out of recruitment. My roommate dropped out before pref day and was called very early on bid day with a bid offer. She attended bid day activities along with everyone else and no one really knew she was a snap bid.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't ask the question but did not know what a snap bid was as well. So COB is also for houses that did not meet quota?

COB is also a way for houses to add members but does not happen right before bid day events. COB often (but not always) happens in the spring once/if there are December graduates, transfers, and/or if fall new members decide not to get initiated. It may be perceived as “spring rush” but it’s not a recruitment process per se. if you want to do COB, get in touch with Panhellenic and they share pnm names with chapters OR talk with your friends who are in a house and let them know you are interested in joining.

Thanks for the thorough explanation. I was wondering the same thing. So do all houses often participate in this spring rush? I imagine in all of the chapters some of the PNMs may have dropped, seniors graduated, etc. Would houses like Theta, PBP or DG that always meet quota during fall have an open COB during spring? Are there any cons to doing COB rushing in the spring?

Every house has probably done COB at some point in their past, but it may have been a while for some. I would not count on some of them doing it especially if they ended up going over quota this recruitment. And just because a house loses a few girls due to transfer etc does not mean they will do COB. If they are only a few away from “house total” they may not see COB as Needed. Not sure how COB will go with new formats this year but in the past some houses did spring events in the BLUU to meet girls. These were very low key compared to typical recruitment. Usually Though houses announce to their members they are doing COB and ask for recommendations. So your best way is to: 1. let your friends know you are interested in joining their house. 2. Also get you name on the list at Panhellenic. And you can always go through recruitment your sophomore year. It’s possible a new chapter might be added in the next few years (rumor for several years @ Alpha Phi) so that’s a good opportunity to be part of a new chapter.

Normally it’s phi mu, adpi, sk, axo, and gamma phi. PBP, theta, and dg always meet their quotas so I doubt their doing cob. Also PBP and Theta have the biggest pc’s they have ever had so they are definitely not do cob. I don’t know how big DG pc is but I have never really heard of them doing cob since they always meet their quota. A new sorority is supposed to be coming to campus soon so maybe they will participate in spring rush.

The houses with smaller overall membership numbers will do COB, regardless of whether they achieved quota. All of the houses reached quota this past recruitment, but for those whose membership numbers are still below average, COB is an option that can help them to increase their overall membership number.

Is that typical that all houses meet quota? That's amazing. I had heard PBP, Theta, and PHI Mu went over quota. I could be wrong about that though. I heard from someone DG did not meet quota so a few of us are hoping maybe they participate in COB. Not sure how accurate that it is because from what someone said above DG always makes quota. When do they announce who is doing COB so we can get to know some of the girls in those houses?

If a new sorority were to come in for Spring would that all be COB rushing? If it is a new sorority does that mean there are no members yet established and whoever wants to join can join? I would definitely be up for that.

- Just because a house didn’t meet quota in this recruitment does not mean they will
Do COB. They may still have more than enough people to meet their house numbers.
- Its highly doubtful a new chapter will be here by spring. It’s a bit complicated to happen that fast.
