Is it necessary to go out every night with older sorority girls to parties in order to get a bid? Is this ever frowned upon?

It doesn't help or hurt. It is more a weeding out process.

Don't read too much into things. You are either on their target list or you are not. Going to a party doesn't change things. Could totally hurt if you get drunk and act the fool.

It doesn't hurt to be friendly! But we want you to make friends in your own pledge class. If we invite you, come with us but it's ok to have other plans with your freshman buddies!

I will agree with @Haha, by now most sororities know who they want.
