rec

by: pnm

so I asked this lady to write me a letter of recommendation and she said she would, I sent her all of my rush packets but then she just NEVER responded.
There aren't many options, so I was wondering what y'all thought if I just asked another person in the same alumnae group?

Should I mention I contacted that group beforehand, and just say Ole Miss sororities encourage multiple letters?

How do you know she didn't already write it? She wouldn't have returned it to you, she would have sent it directly in.

Well, this was about Two months ago. I assumed she never wrote it and didnt want to because i asked her a few questions and she didnt respond:(
Is it common for rec writers to do this?

I had over 40 ladies write rec/LOS for me, representing every sorority. Exactly three LOS writers sent me a copy of what she wrote. None of the red writers did.

A few told me they mailed in the rec, but for the most part, they did not as a whole let me know.

you should send her a thank you note just thanking her again for taking the time to write you a recommendation. Then, if she forgot about it it will remind her and if she decided not to write it then hopefully she'll let you know that. Rec writers don't tend to feel the need to let PNMs know when they've sent in their recs, unfortunately. It can be very very nerve-wracking when you have no clue if it they got done or not! If you feel the need, then ask another lady if she would be willing to write one. It can't hurt. It is good to have multiple, so I would go for it. I hope you get it all figured out!

Send and thank you note (handwritten not email!), and then ask another alum. My mom always told girls when their recs were sent in if they sent a prompt thank you. Sometimes she would wait until the girl sent a thank you note to send it in, just to be sure the girl had good manners. Southerners and sorority women are fussy about this, don't piss them off or they can always "no rec" you.

Out of curiosity, what if they sent a thank you note with their rec packet? Would she expect another thank you note later or would that one be enough?

A thank you note with the packet is good!! That's all that is needed.

For the sake of helping the OP, I think "Yep" just meant to say that you should sneak in a thank you again so you seem appreciative and sweet (guilt trip the alum if you will).

If the thank you letter seems too confusing for you. E-mail the rec writer and ask if she needs anything. Some sororities require two photos, for instance! Ask if she needs an other photo of you! This will be a reminder for the alum.
You can use this as a cheat:
"Hello, Mrs. ______________, I am so grateful that you're taking the time to write me a recommendation for ______! I was just wondering if you needed a second picture for my recommendation. I think I have read somewhere that sororities require two photos but I only sent you one. If you need an extra picture or anything else let me know! Again, thank you!"
