do rankings matter?

I'm trying to keep an open mind going through recruitment but I definitely have some ideas about some sororities after reading things on here. What I'm asking though is if you're in a "lower tier" sorority does it really change your experience? I know there are all types of girls in each sorority but do other people on campus treat you differently based on your sorority? And does your sorority really affect whether some fraternity will hang out with you or not?

Honestly, sororities are all the same. It's just how the sorority girls hold themselves. That's the only difference.

Tiers do matter. People do view you according to your letters!

A good example is looking at the dynamics of high school clubs and how people view each group.

Top tier: cheerleaders. They get respect and are looked up to. No they're not perfect, but they are perceived as having the most fun.

Middle tier: dance team. Every bit as talented as cheerleaders, just not as popular.

Bottom tier: band. They get no respect, but have a blast with their awkward band friends.

I'm not insinuating that there are no cheerleaders in bottom tier houses, these are simply metaphors.

I agree completely. But there really is a mix of everyone in every house! Some girls may think that the top tier girls are stuck up and snobby and preppy and that the bottom tier girls are more down to earth. And someone else may think that the top tier girls are competitive and motivated while the lower tier houses are more laid back and awkward. Idk. There are competitive, snobby, preppy, down to earth, motivated, awkward girls in every. single. house. But yes, some houses may have a few more of one type that another house.

Yes, that's a pretty good analogy.

The dynamics of sororities are much like cliques in high school.

Of course tiers matter! Just like in life, there is always a hierarchy.

If you don't let them matter then they don't. Yes, if you're a Theta or another "bottom tier" house there are going to be lots of people who judge you. You are going to see lots of comments on this website saying that Theta's are weird, etc. But if you love Theta and don't care what people say and don't care that they call you "bottom tier", then it doesn't matter! Of course there are going to be tons of people who do not judge you based on your letters. But there will be tons who do. Some people look at girls wearing top tier letters on their t-shirts and judge those girls because that person thinks that all top tier girls are spoiled preppy brats. And some people will think that about all sorority women in every tier. Tiers matter a lot to some people, and tiers don't matter at all to some people. There are tiers, and it is real, but if you don't pay attention to it or listen to bad things people say about every house, then they don't really exist for you. You don't have to listen to people calling some houses bottom tier, because in reality, all the houses are different, but they are all fabulous! It is what you make it.
