alumni

by: hi

Sooo I see it said a lot that alumni of some chapters really have the most say in bid lists and stuff. Is that mostly the younger girls who have just graduated? Or like alumni our mothers age? Just curious

It's both. Many of the younger girls move away and get busy with their lives, but a few always seem to stick around. Older ladies tend to get very involved when their daughters or nieces or friends are going through.

What chapters at Ole Miss are we talking about? Also Is it Alumni that went to Ole Miss or is it Alumni that went to other schools or both? How do girls going through rush compete when Alumni do not know them ?

It's pretty much all the houses except a few. This is why we always say that a rec from a chapter (ole miss) alumni holds so much more weight than a non chapter (any other school) alumni does.

Most houses hold some kind of pretend voting, but it is the alumni working behind the scenes that order the lists. You may have a lot of girls voting yes for you, but then have an alumni place you on the list below the cut off point.

It's why we always tell pnm's not to take things personally when a house drops them.

Pi phi, aopi, ADPi, and theta are good houses for those girls without chapter alumni supporting them.

Sad. Actives should be able to choose their own members. Sisterhood would be better.

So we need to get a Rec or support letter from an Alumni that went Ole Miss ? If this is true, how do girls from OOS get in without connections. I know that several girls got in top sororities that did not have Ole Miss recs.

Ole miss alumni live all over the country! It's not that hard when you start looking. Local Panhellenic association will be able to help you find ole miss alumni.

Alumni do have a lot of say. Top houses want legacies and girls from "good areas" and alumni are good at securing these girls. Bid lists are created but they aren't set in stone. This is why meeting actives before rush is crucial. If you really really click with them and they pull for you, not having rec letters or connections won't matter. Try your hardest to get rec letters from ole miss alumni. They carry more weight because they know what kind of girls their chapter wants.

I am from OOS and have a REC from Ole Miss Alumni in 4 of the top sororities. I did not set out to do this ,it just happened. I am not a legacy but have several family members mainly aunts , who are members of sororities at southern universities and are writing support letters and Recs to top houses at Ole Miss. The girls that I have met are all wonderful and I would be lucky to receive a bid from any of the sororities at Ole Miss.

Did you have a question?

You are a great example of how oos girls get recs! Mississippi girls put little to no effort into recruitment. Oos girls have to work much harder to secure their bid, but it is possible!

Yes, then why should we rush !!!

Sorority life is great! And you shouldn't change your mind because you're scared of alumni having a voice during recruitment.
If the alumni have a voice and they decide that you're not right for the sorority, then you don't want to be there anyways!
Remember that actives have voices too!! They will stand up for you during the voting process if they want you!! The alumni are there so their sorority doesn't go downhill. They just want to get girls that they feel would be a good fit.
Don't decide to not to go through rush because you're scared of alumni.

do you meet Alumni of a sorority that you might want to be in? Does having Recs and Support Letters from alumni from other schools, that were very active Nationally help?

If you manage to find alumni who are active with the Ole Miss chapter, then good for you! You don't get to meet them though. You will see them during rush, especially during Pref and Bid Day.
Honestly a rec from an Ole Miss alumni would look good, but it won't guarantee anything. Any school will work, but to be honest if you get an alumni from an SEC or a respectable school then that will look good too!
If your rec is active in Nationals that would be awesome!! HOWEVER, it won't guarantee you anything. I had one for DG and I was dropped after Philanthropy round (no biggie, I love my house! :)).
