hazing and cost

by: mississippigirl

Is hazing an issue at Ole Miss? How do I know which sororities do it and which ones don't?

Also, let's say I get a bid, how much can I ball park the cost for being in a sorority? I'd be paying for it all by myself

You're talking about sororities right?

There are no sororities in campus that haze!!!!

Sororities are expensive! Thousands of dollars! The costs vary but you will spend somewhere between $4,000 and $8,000 to belong to a sorority. These costs cover dues, fees, meals, etc.

What sorority cost $8000? I thought most were around $5000 a year. Which is not too bad if you eat all your meals at the house. Most girls don't so then the bill does get expensive.

Is possible to only pay dues and fees and not the extra stuff:/

The cost of fitting in with the other girils is high at "top tier" houses

Typically coat 3,000-4,000 dollars a year. That is just dues and fees. Then you have a meal plan, mandatory t shirts, costs of fitting in with the other girls. It's expensive.

do you HAVE to get meal plans? People already have that with the school, that is ridiculous, to HAVE to buy meal plans. I get buying stuff for shirts every now and then with the house name on it and such but I can't justify buying a meal plan because you normally get that from the school.

Don't forget all the extra expenses associated with sororities like clothing, shoes, etc

You have to purchase clothing for rush, costumes for swaps, nice dresses for formals and date parties.

We buy at least one tshirt each week. Plus sweatshirts, rain jackets, jerseys etc.

Gosh, I thought high school was over. Why in the world would you buy a mandatory t shirt each week? Sounds like sororities are childish and over rated. No wonder so many girls from my high school eventually dropped out.

Sororities are just like high school in some ways. I wouldn't recommend you rush because it sounds like you can't afford it at all. We don't buy a t shirt every week, but we might buy a few every few months. You're going to want them with the name of your philanthropy, your formal, after a big football game. It's fun wearing your sororiyy t shirt on campus.

I'm not the original poster. My family can afford the sorority bills. I was referring to a couple of the post that indicated that "mandatory t shirts" purchased "at least one a week". That just seemed silly to me.I'm thinking that Soroities may not be my deal. I'm ready to do something different than high school.

I posted the response about buying tshirts each week. I don't remember saying anything about it being mandatory!

But, everyone buys them! I LOVE my tshirt collection! It depends on the sorority, but we buy tshirts for EVERYTHING! Every swap has a tshirt, every formal had a tshirt, every philanthropy activity had a tshirt! You get my point, you are basically buying a tshirt for every activity you participate in. The good news is that we actually wear these shirts EVERYDAY.

We are proud of our sororities and love wearing our letters. But all that stuff isn't free!

the answers on some of these questions are so funny. Y'all sound so stuck up and a bad representation of Ole Miss Greek life.

We are more than spoiled daddy girls! Each sorority at ole miss raises money for their philanthropies. Most houses break national records for the amounts raised. Most sororities require we participate in additional volunteer activities outside of our sororities. We have the highest gpa's on campus.

Sororities are a huge financial and time commitment! Don't knock us! We work hard and we play hard. WE ARE NOT SO DIFFERENT THAN ANY OTHER GREEK SYSTEM IN THE NATION.

okay. but that doesn't change the fact most of the answers on a lot of these questions were pretty stuck up. That is awesome y'all do all that stuff with your sororities but when people have a stuck up attitude with their answers, that gets shadowed very quickly.
I'm sure most of the girls aren't like that. The person that asked this question didn't need the rudeness. Have a blessed day.

The original poster is way out of her league asking these questions. I understand that not everyone understands Greek life, but the answers were honest!

The sorority houses at ole miss are big and old and expensive! They cost money to run, and the costs associated with sororities include maintenance, etc. sororities count on their members to keep the houses nice and functioning

There are benefits to these houses, especially when they are conveniently located on campus. I love always having friends to eat with, a place to study between classes, and a house mom who helps us throughout the day.

To me the costs are worth it, but in all honesty my dad does foot the bill. If it were up to me to pay, no way could I afford it.

Hello there! I am the original poster of this question. I find it quite offensive you saying "I'm out of my league" for asking this question. I KNOW sororities are expensive, especially in the SEC. I am EXPECTING to pay thousands to be in it. I'd be shocked if it were any cheaper. I have A TON of my own money saved up. I was simply just wondering what girls are paying now. I'm very lucky to have a family that can foot the bills for my educational costs and they will probably also help me pay for some of the costs of a sorority when the time comes.
I don't how I am "out of my league" simply planning and budgeting for my education and extra circulars activities. There is nothing wrong wanting to know what to expect, no matter what your financial situation is. It's called being responsible.

I'm sure you a kind, young woman but please think before you pass judgement like that because I never said I couldn't afford it, I just said I'd be paying for it. Have a blessed day :)
