What would make you a legacy? I got invited back to DDD and I'm wondering if it's because my aunt was one

Ddd doesn't count aunts as legacies.

The exact meaning of “legacy” varies from sorority to sorority. Some sororities include nieces, while others do not. You ask what is a legacy?

ΑΔΠ: “...a sister, daughter, or granddaughter of an initiated member of Alpha Delta Pi."

ΑΟΠ: "...a sister, daughter, or granddaughter; a step-sister, step-daughter, or step-granddaughter; or an adopted sister, daughter, or granddaughter of an initiated member of Alpha Omicron Pi (alive or deceased)."

ΔΓ: "...a great-granddaughter, granddaughter, daughter, sister or the same step-relation of a Delta Gamma member."

ΔΔΔ: "...a daughter, step-daughter, sister or step-sister of a Tri Delta member."

KΑΘ: "...a daughter, granddaughter, great-granddaughter, or sister of a Kappa Alpha Theta. Stepdaughters, step granddaughters, step great-granddaughters, and stepsisters are considered legacies if their family considers them as such and if the family asks that they be considered as such on the legacy introduction form."

KΔ: "...the daughter, granddaughter or sister of an initiated member in good standing. A member in good standing is a member who has not resigned or is not on National Probation. Half and step relations are considered legacies if their KD family member in good standing considers them as such."

KKΓ: "...a sister, daughter, granddaughter or great-granddaughter of an initiated member. While step-relatives, cousins and nieces are not legacies, we recognize they may have special knowledge of and interest in Kappa Kappa Gamma...

KKΓ cont'd: "...and encourage our chapters to get to know these women who have a connection to the Fraternity."

ΠBΦ: "...a daughter, sister or granddaughter of an initiated member shall be considered a legacy of Pi Beta Phi."

ΦM: "...a sister, half-sister, step-sister, daughter, step-daughter, granddaughter, or great-granddaughter of a Phi Mu in good standing with the Fraternity."

XΩ: "...daughter/sister of a Chi Omega."

Not only do you have to look at who is considered a legacy, but each chapter has different policies about the treatment of said legacies. For instant: according to national policy, a Tri Delt legacy is treated the same as any other pnm. No special treatment or guaranteed bids.

No legacy is guaranteed a bid in any case. If the chapter bids a legacy, it's because they want her not because they're stuck with her. Even chapters whose nationals mandate certain conditions have opportunities to cut legacies and they damn well know it.

Sororities at ole miss don't ever listen to national policy. Last year DG cut triple legacies after first round.

You girls need to get over your legacy statuses. If they invite you back it's because they want to get to know you a little better. If they don't, more on to houses that are more interested.

Unless your mom is a VERY ACTIVE INHOUSE ALUMNAE, we don't care who your mom or grandmother or aunt is.

Harsh but true! Never rely on a legacy status to pull you through to bid day!

I don't think there's anything to get over, as long as the PNM doesn't expect her legacy status to carry her through recruitment. And I think it has been well established at this point that with so many sorority women, legacy status means less and less to the national organization. I do think it can mean a lot on an individual level. Although I was not a legacy anywhere, that I'm in a sorority I can see how it could be a special bond for a biological relatives to share.

if my grandmama had heard about this happening to me from the house I was a double legacy at, she would have had nationals on the house's ass asap.

that is just so rude and shows what kind of chapter dg is.

Great! :) I was really hoping that it wasn't cause I was a legacy. I rather believe that they want to get to know me instead of "oh bring her back cause she's a legacy". Thanks y'all!!

Not at ole miss. All legacies, regardless of the chapter are invited back because they want you. Not because they have to.

There are a few legacies that they "have to" but very few. And not just Tri Delt!

Chi o probably takes the most legacies but I heard even that is changing this year.

Legacy status does and should count based on national policy. Ole Miss is no exception. Otherwise the chapter can get in trouble with nationals. But legacy =/= shoo-in.

And what are nationals supposed to do once a legacy is cut? There is no way to get that pnm back except through snap bids (which are very rare and only if said pnm doesn't receive a bid somewhere else).

It will do Moms, grandmas, even sisters no good to complain to nationals. Best they can hope for is a lame apology and a "we thought she would be happier elsewhere" statement.

would think the usual policy is a fine, but I'm not a member of all the houses so I can't say what it would be for every house. I know for my house there's a fine associated with these things.

National policies have so many loopholes. When you are the alpha chapter, nobody cares if you don't follow policy. I promise, DG paid no fines they do as they please

Depends on how much pull the alumna has and/or how many alumnae are complaining.
