How much does your GPA really matter when going through sorority rush?

it is HUGE. You won't even get to invitational parties without a really good GPA.

If you have a 3.0 or above you will be fine but anything below that you will more than likely be cut. Especially since ole miss will be getting two new sororities next year.

TWO new sororities next year? I don't think so... Who do you think is colonizing? Alphi Phi is coming by 2014/2014, but that is the only one that I know of.

Rumor is that ole miss is getting two new sororities. You probably don't even go to school there

There is a big difference between "ole miss WILL be getting two new sororities" and "RUMOR is that ole miss is getting 2 new sorotities".

Whether or not I go to Ole Miss, apparently I know more about sororities there than you do.

I had the same questions on here as well last year... It does matter a lot honestly. If you have below a 3.0 it will be very tough.

Most of the first cuts are based on gpa-anything below a 3.0 will make it really hard to get in!

does a having above a 3.0, like a 3.7 make you look better, or after a 3.0 no one cares? I saw a statistic compilation and the average weighted gpa is 3.5 and 24 ACT, if you have much higher than that aren't you kind of above most girls?

By: pnm
by: Rebel Girl

NO, having a 3.5 and 24 ACT does NOT put you "above most girls" going through rush at Ole Miss. Not by a very long shot.

A good gpa will not always get you a good bid, it is just a starting point. I had a 4.0 gpa going in and was still cut by several sororities. Apparently you need good grades, extra curriculars, volunteer hours, AND individual contacts within the house who are willing to fight for you! Below a 3.0 and you are an easy cut! Two girls on my floor had 2.7's and both got cut after the first round.

If you have a 3.7 or above, above 28 ACT, ton of community service, leadership positions, pretty, all your recs, know some but not many actives at ole miss, can you compete to get in the better houses? I know all houses are great but do you have to be wealthy to go tri delt, or legacy for kd or chi o? I'm very friendly and social I'm just not a pageant girl or cheerleader type, can I get a bid from top houses? I know I'm lucky to get any bid, it's just very very scary thinking oboist rush even though its really far off

You will be fine! Try to attend a spring party or two and stay with the few actives you know. Meet their friends. If you are really all that, you should be fine.

if you are a legacy in a house, have several recs for almost every sorority, community service hours and a high ACT score but a 2.9 what are the odds or getting no bids?

by: uh

how in the world do you have a high ACT but a 2.9 GPA??? Are you just absolutely amazing at standardized tests but never do your homework or study for everyday school..?

Sorry! Grades are the most important part of your resume.
Hate to break it to you, but if you have below a 2.8 you're screwed. Sorry. Alumni are watching their chapters closely, no house wants to be the grade risk house, and we drop girls with bad grades after the first day depending on the national grade requirements.

what houses specifically would drop due to grades

All of them. If you're a grade risk Theta, ADPi, and Alpha Phi are your most likely choices. Unless you have strong connections to other houses, those three are your best options depending on how bad your GPA is.
Make sure your GPA is a 2.8 or above.
What houses would drop due to grades? What kind of question is that? Sorry, but you should know by now that grades matter. Seriously this conversation is on this site and girls should have informed you that sororities care about PNM's grades

seriously???? a gpa of 2.8 unweighted and above 3.0 weighted with numerous AP classes would result with a drop from all but two less selective houses? hm

Seriously!!!!! They only look at unweighted, and nobody cares whether or not they were ap classes. If you couldn't make the grades in ap classes, maybe you shouldn't have taken them! Nobody, and I mean nobody looks at your act or sat scores!

Let me clear the air with you once again.
AP classes are considered COLLEGE LEVEL CLASSES. If you have a low GPA with a bunch of college level classes that makes the sorority think "Huh, she will probably not do well in college because she doesn't have a good GPA with college level classes."
We take unweighted GPA because different schools do it differently, which stinks because you think that you have earned above a 3.0.
I wouldn't say that you'll be stuck with ADPi and Theta just yet. The girl rushing you might think you're really awesome and you might have been really involved... But this poor attitude that you have about you thinking that you are too good for those houses are ridiculous.
Sororities care about grades! Sorry to break that to you!

There's no problem with those houses! I'll probably fit in with them really well tbh. It's just crazy to think that one is immediately done because you're .0whatever below the "cut off"! I was under the impression that 2.7-below is immediate drop and that houses DO take grade risks. Was this wrong information?

Houses would only take grade risks if you have STRONG connections. A house would probably take 2-4 girls who are a grade risk if they like them enough. And it's cute that you think you know more than the girls who actually know the cut offs. You're just assuming because the red zone is a 2.7 and below.
Let me just tell you this: 1,800+ girls are going to go through rush and sororities want to be the house with the best girls and the best grades. Girls are competitive like that. My friends in other houses have told me that their chapter have raised the GPA cut off and so has mine.
Before you say something that you really don't know about, just think. Girls in sororities some times don't get a say in who to keep after the first day. Some houses send the information to nationals and they say "Okay, this girl can stay but our cut off is 2.85 so the girls below it have to go". You're going to need a lot of connections to stay if you're a grade risk.

Check out the ole miss Greek life page. It is spelled out there. 3.0 and above you will be fine (except maybe kappa. Rumors are that they can only take girls with a 3.2 or above. Idk). 2.9-2.8 your options will be limited. 2.7 and most nationals wont allow a sorority to issue you a bid.

Only unweighted gpas are looked at.

Kappa is not the only sorority to raise the minimum. Many of the others also raised it to above a 3.0 with few exceptions. You have to have serious connections and probably alumni connections to get past that requirement.
