ole miss enrollment
by: CuriousWhy has enrollment dropped at ole miss? It’s definitely not the cost of going to ole miss because it is one of the cheapest out of state schools to go to. But is it because ole miss is getting stricter? What am i missing here? because oxford is one of the nicest college towns in the country, and we have one of the nicest campuses in the country. I just don’t understand what’s deterring rising freshman from coming to Ole Miss.
#2 by: Double sucking
One aspect of it is because the football team sucks and the academic reputation does too. It takes a balance of both, or one much better than the other, to be a desirable college option, but when both are bad the students and parents are going to look elsewhere. It's all about rankings, even though IRL it's a great place Sounds familiar, huh?
#3 by: Raise standards
Ole Miss needs to raise their academic standards. A lot of State Universities across the nation have already raised their standards and are now able to be very selective in their recruitment process. Anyone can come to Ole Miss. They also need to become known for something other than the grove during Football season. They need to become the best at something, build a program that stands out, maybe Journalism, International Studies, or Accounting- just something that can brings some recognition and then have the good sense to market those programs.
#4 by: why
While the OOS tuition is cheap compared to other schools, it has gone up enough in the past few years that I've known students who had to return to their home state due to the rise so it has affected some prospects likely.
Agree about football dropping being a factor, but there's been enough 'bad behavior' problems in recent years that I think that's a big factor - definitely as someone else said, the KA situation only reinforces racism and that will put many students of color off. Other fraternity incidents, certainly this terrible murder situation (which could happen anywhere but still...) is enough to make some students and parents think otherwise. I know some people have been very put off by how terrible Theta was treated since it indicates a toxic Greek environment and while it might seem silly, some girls don't want to rush in a place where people are treated so badly.

The accounting program is reportedly in the top 10 in the country. The journalism/new media school is also often noted in national rankings. But an SEC school with low entry rate, Grove/football traditions, etc. is likely never going to be what some people want it to be because what does stand out is the beauty of the campus (OM routinely wins national awards for that), the quaint nature of the town and the Grove.
And those programs above, along with the Honors college, are marketed to get top students to attend.
