flipping things around
by: missWhat is recruitment like for the MIssissippi moms? What do you do when you come up to oxford during recruitment? I mean, you spend 18 years stressing about your child having a certain social circle, connecting well with a certain crowd, making sure she's introduced to the sorority influencers (assuming you're not queen bee yourself). By the time you get to college, aren't you exhausted by all of it?

Well, things have changed since the days when Ole Miss had sorority rush at the start of school. Back then, your mamma and daddy would be in town for move-in, and mamma would stay for all of rush week to take charge of your wardrobe, help you with your hair and make-up, and use her contacts to find out all she could on the behind-the-scenes gossip/drama. On bid day, daddy would be standing by with the empty U-Haul waiting to hear from mamma on how you did. If you got the right house, the culmination of everybody's dreams had been realized and family and friends were notified that it was time to celebrate. But, if you got the wrong house, or none at all, that U-Haul would be put to use moving your things out of your dorm after you were immediately withdrawn from Ole Miss. Back home you went, and excuses were made/invented for the sake of family and friends on this disastrous turn of events. Plan B would then commence; getting you registered at another school with a chapter of the target sorority where they hadn't had rush yet. This would be your backdoor strategy, allowing you to get a bid and initiate at another school so you could transfer back to Ole Miss and affiliate there. Ah, the old days...

Yes yes the old uhaul story. I assume things are the same now...except they can't move their child to a new school so they have to concoct a story at home about what went awry, such as the old computer glitch story, or some problem with old miss Greek staff and their misguided commitments to diversity and the out of state students. Oh, the humanity!
