why did theta really close???
by: curious
i doubt they closed because "they were picked last on greek ranks". does anyone have an actual reason why they are closing?
Even though their house raises quite a bit of money, I don't think they have the alumni support like some other houses here...are they closing for a lack of funds?
Are they closing due to membership? Obviously theta can't be as selective as other houses. They generally reach out to everyone during rush, are they just having a hard time getting girls to join and stay?
Whats the real reason??

They got paid to leave. The figure I was told was $1.5 million.
They were struggling for many reasons, a little is lack of $$$, a bigger issue was a lack of alumni support, but the biggest issue was just getting members and keeping them.
Ole Miss didn't want a house with "picked last" (not to be rude) so they paid Theta. Theta was some what embarrassed of the Ole Miss chapter so they took the money and will be reinvesting it at other schools.
In the business world: it's just like closing a location that's losing you money and using the money from the sale of that location on other things that will help you.
As sad as it sounds, it's actually a good thing: Ole Miss now doesn't have a "picked last" house. It creates more diversity among houses.
Theta got money and can use that money in other schools to help grow their national chapter.
Also as a side note: as competitive as greek sororitys are here...the objective is to have every girl match. To soon to say if Theta will be replaced since our enrollment is actually declining. But if enrollment does raise again, then you can expect a new chapter to come in, and maybe that new chapter could very well be Theta itself, of course a re-branded and improved Theta.

this is also what i heard: that theta was leaving because their nationals couldn’t afford to stay. not because the moms on greek rank bullied them off campus.
ultimately, a sorority is a business. if your business is unprofitable, you have to consider closing it. it’s a sad day for the ole miss greek community because there’s one less chapter on this campus. one less home for girls to find.

The University is LYING to cover their ass. They were absolutely in the loop and consulted SEVERAL times prior to this action. They threw Theta HQ under the buss, trying to wash their hands clean. The truth will come out. We may have been bullied on campus. We wont be lied about by adults.

The women who need to know how and why are not on this site. The University of Mississippi will survive this affair, as will Kappa Alpha Theta, as will the women of Epsilon Zeta. Where a door closes, a window will open. Use your time on earth to worry about more important things. Oh yes, and please remember to vote next Tuesday.

When ZTA was shut down in the mid-90’s, and I was an active during this time so I bore witness to it all, it was the very same treatment and atmosphere: lack of support and innuendos, unkindness and untruths. There was plenty of nastiness to go around and so incredibly hurtful. What can we learn from this? Instead of debating who was right or wrong, who’s the bad guy, focus on these women. We don’t know the whole story. Chances are we never will. Support and compassion are what’s needed right now. Encouragement. Praise for the great work they have done. The more we pull one another apart the less we are together. So please, for these women, for all our existing houses on campus, please...pull together and focus on the bigger picture. Focus on these young women and give them kind reminders of the positive impact of their legacy in Oxford.

1) The chapter did not close because of financial issues. Each chapter is financially supported by their members (both chapter operations and housing), not by nationals. If they needed more money, they would have raised dues.
2) The FSL environment is so toxic, it is next to impossible to survive when constant bullying and negative comments are made about a group and PNM's would rather be a GDI than a Theta.
3) Just because you can say something (in this case negative and bullying) doesn't meant you should. Life is hard enough, support each other vs. tear people down.
4) No matter if comments on GR are students or adults, it is time to grow up.
5) Being in a top tier (or bottom tier) group is not the "end all, be all" and does not define your success or failure in life. It's really not as big of deal as PNM's are led to believe.
6) Theta is a very strong national group and the members of Epsilon Zeta are strong leading women that will benefit from their membership long after the chapter leaves Ole Miss campus.

UM was completely unaware that theta was pulling their chapter from here and is actually trying to talk them into not leaving.
