ole miss needs more sororities!!!

by: more pls!

Having already gone through rush last year, I completely understand the anxiety rush gives girls and the how important sisterhood is in panhellenic sororitiy chapters. I feel like the biggest prob here is that PCs are getting HUGE and it makes for a less intimate/true sisterhood (specifically in houses like ADPi, APhi, etc. who have had insanely large PCs for so many years in a row and subpar retention rates) That’s being said, I think it’s time to add another chapter on campus!! could be beneficial in giving out more bids while still having close knit PCs. thoughts?

And hold it earlier like everyone else. People have formed friendships before rush cause it's so late and lose those friendships after getting different sororities or no house at all.

most friendships change over the course of 4 years. the people you are friend(ly) with the first month of college are not likely to be the ones you're closest to at the end of schools.

And if those friendships don't last because of sorority rush then i'd say they weren't that tight to begin with. which they are not. Because it's been a month.

Ole Miss will not get another sorority on campus for quite a while. First, the chapters there currently have to even out in size.

Second, the current system is so nasty and vicious toward new chapters. Even NPC knows about the hostile environment there. Few sororities are willing to invest the millions of dollars it will take to risk a new colony.

Having hostile Mommas didn't stop Alpha Phi and ADPi from coming to campus. And although they are having some growing pains, they're growing.

This is the truth. My understanding of Univ. of Arkansas' Greek system is that the sororities there have been very supportive of new chapters. And while I don't think they're as competitive as Ole Miss, it's still a competitive system.

There are MANY factors involved that go beyond the need to make the houses evened out in size and perhaps smaller overall. There's the cost of a house (millions), the need for plenty of alumni locally to support the house and yes, the need for a supportive Greek system. Now there's the issue of land too although that's pretty minor compared to the other factors listed.

I know there've been sororities invited to present in the past (when ADPI and Phi did) that declined due to the unsupportive atmosphere here. Makes sense - you can colonize at somewhere like Arkansas where it is supportive and your new chapter has a real shot at doing well. If I were involved in colonizing, I'd go there in a heartbeat over a place where there's no support.

As for supporting new chapters, it's not a good thing when even a long-existing chapter like Theta has had little support through the year which is another reason why sororities are hesitant to colonize here. They get bashed for the "type" of members they have, for being this and not being that. Any system that truly wants to grow their Greek system will support every house, whether it's new or not. Another example is how Alpha Phi has been bashed, again for having a certain type of member.

It's no wonder it's hard to get new chapters here.

While I agree that more sororities would be nice, I do not appreciate you using adpi & aphi as examples bc that’s just a little rude (I’m sure that wasn’t your intention, just wanted to let you know). From what I’ve seen/ heard they both have great sisterhoods. I’m sure it is hard to get to know everybody when the PCs are so big, but you can still get to know a large group of girls and make life long best friends.

I agree that more sororities are needed, but the University would have to build parking structures to free up space for new houses. (I think you could put one next to APhi, and another next to Tri-Delt.) And yep, it is a HUGE investment.

No campus that has to have variable quota is a candidate for sorority expansion. Equitable membership totals and new members class sizes across the board have to be sustainable through regular RFM, with no houses struggling to attract or retain members, before that could happen. Not until all existing houses are recruiting well, retaining their members, and conducting COB on the same level would any other NPC sorority even think about coming here.

so, the economic theory of supply and demand die at the perimeter of Oxford.

ladies. you are smarter than this. the eight of you who gave this a thumbs up must also boycott permits for a new business in town bc one business isn't doing as well.

i know you are smarter than this: apply economic and trade terms to the actions you recommend.

You're obviously an outsider to sororities, and not too bright if you think this is an economic system. Social societies aren't businesses (duh) and must operate under different principles to be successful. When campus chapters fall behind, or if even one totally fails, the whole system suffers; existing chapters can't offer as quality a membership experience, lots of potential members are shut out completely, and it just gets worse unless fostered and allowed to reach full potential under NPC principles. Don't you worry your little non-member head about it; NPC has been doing this a long, long time successfully on hundreds of campuses. We got it.

Sororities are non-profit orgs. They need to earn enough moment to sustain and grow (I.e. dues paid to maintain huge houses, money to expand to a new campus) but there are very few paid employees and they’re not looking to make a profit. There’s a diminishing return on investment when a chapter has too many members, which is why chapters aren’t just come one, come all in order to squeeze money out of members. It’s about building a reputation and experience, so you need a decent amount of money in order to create the experience, but that’s not the only ingredient for sorority success.

Also UArk uses variable quota. They were the first campus to use it. They’ve also colonized 3 new chapters since 2012, including DG in 2016. They, like many other state schools in the south, have chapters the in-state girls feel they HAVE to join, and chapters they feel they absolutely cannot. They’ve been using variable quota for longer than Ole Miss, and it’s sort of the great experiment to see how long it takes chapters to even out.

NPC, I don't like your tone. I don't like the poor quality of information provided to people on this site and I despise my investment dragged through the mud as "regional discrimination keepers" keep their heels down. You want time, talent, money but, refuse to respect people because they are from OOS?

Your specific post has given me much to think about. Thank you. Thank you very much.\n\n\n\n\n
