oos sororities
by: QuestionsComing from OOS but not OOR - which sororities take OOS girls from the South? Which sororities take more OOR (my roommate is from Indiana)? Should we focus on those sororities during recruitment ?

KD, Chi O, and Tri Delt are very hard to get oos so I wouldn’t put too much hope into one of them
DG, Kappa, and Phi Mu take more but they’re still hard to get a bid from especially if you don’t really know anyone in them
Aopi, Adpi, Aphi, and Theta definitely take the most and are all great houses too

Don't focus on any specific sororities during rush! That will stop you from paying attention to others and sororities can pick up on that. I did that and wound up getting cut from not only the houses I was fixated on (seriously, I think I was trying too hard to make them like me even though I knew girls there and that's never appealing), but also many others....so my choices at the end were very, very limited. I really believe it's because I was disinterested in many houses and overly fixated on some and members could tell.
All sororities have girls from everywhere...yes, some have more girls from OOR and some are composed of more girls from Mississippi and Deep Southern states, but please - be open to every single one. Don't go asking around either because that can skew your perception.
Be interested in every single house because you just don't know which house you will fall in love with. And there are exceptions to every rule - some more traditionally Southern houses have some Northern or West Coast members and those with more OOR houses have Miss. and Southern girls.

Pretty much all sororities have at least 50% out of state. Often with sororities like XO DDD and KD most of that 50% is from states like Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida, but there are still those from way out-of-state that get in.
It literally all depends on connections. Pretty much all of those 50% of out-of-state girls had some sort of connection to their sorority. If you have good friends in a sorority that will fight for you, you have a chance. But if you don't know a soul, and you are from OOS, then chances are you will be overlooked when ti comes to XO DDD KD and sometimes DG Phi Mu and KKG too.
This being said, don't get discouraged - just market yourself well, put yourself out there, and be outgoing during rounds and everything will work out. You will most likely get a bid somewhere.

All the sororities will take girls from the south. Chi-O, DDD, DG, and KD will require some form of Ole Miss legacy/connection. It helps to have an Ole Miss connections with Kappa and Phi Mu, but they are more open to good resumes, GPAs and Recs. AOPi and Pi Phi are competitive for OOS and OOR and will make decisions based more on resumes, GPA and Recs. ADPi, Alpha Phi and Theta are excellent sororities for OOS/OOR students and resumes and Recs will be important during recruitment, the GPA is a little lower for these three however they have been improving over the past few semesters.

To the OP's question:
"What about Pi Beta Phi? That is a popular group where I'm from. What kind of girls do they take? I honestly just want a fun, friendly, and supportive sorority that has date parties and other things going on. I know no group's perfect, but I don't want to obsess about rankings."
They don't really require connections as a lower tier house. They have a range of girls like all houses. My best advice? Stop worrying! You might like them, you might not, they may like you or not. Don't focus on what's popular back home, focus on having fun and being open and finding your home. Asking these kinds of questions won't help. If you go through rush, maximize every option, and are open to every house you will get a bid.
Rush will go a whole lot better if you just relax and have fun.

I know as a PNM things can be really overwhelming and rush is such an unusual situation that it's natural to want to know as much as possible and control as many variables as you can. I went on GR all the time before I rushed to try and "learn" about the chapters and only ended up even more confused once actual recruitment started. This site is NOT the place to find good advice or answers to your questions.
That being said:
All chapters take OOS girls. Some take more than others, some take girls from states further away than others, but there is not a single house that is 100% Mississippi natives.
All chapters have fun, friendly, supportive girls, date parties, and activities going on. These houses have hundreds of members, you can find friends and fun girls in any of them if you actually try. Even the "bottom" houses will have parties with fraternities and chances to find dates to formals.
Everyone's rush experience is unique and there are no absolutes, only most likely scenarios. For example, it's most likely that OOS PNMs with strong connections to DDD will get a bid over OOS PNMs with no connections or rec letters. But there will be one person to pop up and say "I know someone in DDD who pledged with no connections and no recs from OOS" because exceptions do happen. If you're the best PNM you can be, you'll find the place to fit.
With variable quota chapters have even more control in picking the PNMs they think will best fit their needs. This means you can't go in with preconceived notions about chapters you want based on what's popular in your hometown. You may think you want Pi Phi now, but who knows how you'll actually feel when you meet those girls? Maybe you'll love them, but maybe you won't. Keep an open mind for ALL the chapters.
