being hispanic
by: PNMHello, I am an incoming freshman at Ole Miss and I have heard rumors that Greek life discriminates (not all but some) if you are something other than white. I am a hispanic and am very interested in rushing. I love all the things that a sorority offers. Making friends, connections and getting involved with charities, but I'm scared to be judged because I'm hispanic. Please be honest should I rush or not?

I’d at least go through rush and see how you feel about it. As long as you have a decent gpa and are nice to the actives you speak to you are almost guaranteed a bid anywhere. It may come at a disadvantage to top houses but honestly the differentiation between sororities by tier isn’t as big a deal on campus as it is on this website so please don’t stress about it. All sororities have swaps, date parties, formals, sisterhood events, participate in all other Greek life’s events, and all have some great girls. You will get avid somewhere.

When I went through, I heard talk from girls in the tents that’s not really worth repeating, but the actives were nothing but kind. I’m in a bottom tier house that I absolutely love and found my family in. I also came in with no connnections. The entire rush experience is what you make of it.

To Greek Love -
Another poster explained what tent talk is...and no, tents weren't around in the 70's and 80's. My aunts rushed here in the 80's and they simply stood in front of the houses in their group, no tent. The irony is that they could have really used a tent - rush used to be held the week before classes started so it was super hot.

What's with the tents? Were tents important back in the day? I occasionally see discussion where 'tent talk' is mentioned. Maybe recruitment was held in tents back in the 70s or 80s?
In response to the OP's question, ignore whatever rumors you hear about Ole Miss. Just come to recruitment with an open mind. There are several sororities that are more legacy based, however we do have great sororities that look at your resume, look at your GPA and will get to know you.
And don't spend too much time on this site - it really is mostly Moms and although some are decent people, some are really disgusting. There's also a fair amount of trolls from other schools who just troll for the fun of stirring up crap.
