nose piercing
by: KCLWill a nose ring impact a PNM during sorority rush? My daughter has a really good GPA; great activities; and is very talented. She's funny, has lots of friends, and is very pretty. She wears nice, stylish clothing and has great hair and makeup...but she has a small (stud) piercing in one nostril. She just got this facial piercing so it's not in any of her photos sent with her recommendations. I get that she's artsy but I'm not a fan of it. She claims it's not as controversial as I seem to think it is. I suspect she'll look like a great candidate in most every other aspect, but will the small nose stud hurt her chances at some/all of the houses?

Take it out. It would likely affect my first impression of her and since every PNM only has a few minutes to impress a member at each party, why risk that?
Look at this way - it could be distracting for some and you don't want anything to distract from members meeting you.

Your daughter is correct, nose piercings are not controversial and lots of students/sorority members have them. She'll be fine on campus. Since recruitment is still considered a more formal event (although dress is casual for the first parts) I would remove the stud or wear a retainer. If she feels very strongly about the piercing she could wear the stud and eliminate the sororities (and their Moms) who would judge her over something so insignificant.

Agree with @No Worries. The ONLY reason I would suggest removing it because recruitment is on the more formal side -- not because of perception. Your daughter, who sounds intelligent, well put together, and talented, does not need to join a sorority who has members that would judge her based on a small nose piercing. And she should not want to. Recruitment is about putting your best YOU forward. Not the best you that others think is best.
