transfer student

by: newstudent

Since I was young, I always wanted to do a sorority. I went to a community college my first two years and now I am transferring to Ole Miss. I’m sociable and have a 4.0 GPA. I won awards for my academics at my cc and I’m a member of Phi Theta Kappa. I guess I’m just really concerned I won’t get a bid considering I’m not a legacy. Ranks don’t matter to me; I want a group of girls who can become my life long friends. How likely is it that I won’t get a bid? Thanks :)

Welcome to Ole Miss - I hope you will love it!

Your issue isn't that you're not a legacy, it's that you're a junior. That's not to say you can't get a bid, but it's important to realize you're up against hundreds of freshmen and sororities want members who will be there as many years as possible. Even sophomores have a hard time.

I would still encourage you to rush, but to know the facts of how it is to rush when you're a junior. If you can connect well enough with enough girls in a house, then you have a shot. You likely will be released pr quickly by the top tier houses and maybe a mid-tier house -- and tiers don't matter, but I think knowing who will likely drop you fast is good to know to avoid surprises (and who knows...there's always someone who defies the odds). But there can be some houses that will be open to non-freshman. I hope you have a successful rush - be open and realistic and try to have fun!

Good advice. If a transfer student comes in with an open mind and is willing to accept a bid from a sorority that might be considered a lower tier I believe they could find a home. It will be a little more difficult without connections so meeting as many people as possible during the first month of school is going to be important. All our Ole Miss Sorority are really good, regardless of what the GR Trolls are constantly posting. If it ends up that you are dropped from all houses during recruitment - be sure to contact Panhellenic immediately (and privately) and let them know you are still interested in Greek life. Sometimes in the shuffle of girls dropping out and if one of the sororities didn't quite make quota they could possibly have them redirect their attention to you. Good luck!

You do not "do" a sorority. This is not a club or activity that you do for fun. It is a joining a sisterhood and making a commitment that we hope you will honor and respect for the rest of your life.

Be sure to get recommendations for EVERY house on campus ASAP. They are important at Ole Miss. Do you have friends in any of the sororities at Ole Miss? That is helpful. Follow the chapter on Instagram.

Hi! I just suggest you get red letters! My sorority took a junior last year and as long as you’re outgoing you shouldn’t have a problem getting a bid somewhere!

What are red letters?

She obviously means Rec letters and you obviously don’t go to Ole Miss or are involved in Greek life in any type of way. Good night troll!
